hah, that's insane, but it seems that engine's gaining popularity for modifying, for example in a ZAZ (out of all cars) http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?viewThread=y&gID=1&fID=1&tID=88610

Well, as the Audis with the earlier V8's get older, more and more will find their way to scrap yards.... it's kind of inevitable.

That is very cool. Any idea on how it will affect the weight distribution?

I'd love to mount one in the back of a Cinquecento, but I don't have any engine swap experience, let alone changing the position of an engine completely.

It probably has ~250 lbs more over the front of the car.

That's probably not too far off. Two of my posts from the VWVortex thread in response to someone saying it would be nose-heavy:
Me (CrazyMonkey) ---> "You could always add weight to the rear of the car and take as much as possible out of the front to bring the front-to-rear weight bias in check. Sure, it'll end up heavier that way, but you have a twin-turbo V8, so who cares?"
Someone else ---> "How much weight we talkin? If you add to much meight, you might as well just buy a tank."
Me ---> "Well, if we assume that the quattro drivetrain is being used, there's a little more weight back there already. Then if you use a carbon fiber hood, that'll shave some weight from the front, move the battery to the rear (removes ~40 lb. from the front) and stuff like that, I bet you could get away with adding maybe 200 lb. to the rear? So if a Rallye weighs 2200ish lb. stock, maybe the V8 and quattro drivetrain weighs 400 lb. more than the 4-banger and syncro drivetrain, but let's say 500 lb. to be a little conservative, then you add the 200 lb. to the rear I was talking about, you end up with a 2900-lb. car.... so let's say it's 3000 lb if you add a roll cage and do some weight reduction to the front end and interior. That's lighter than the Mk4 Golf R32, the Subaru WRX STi, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, and lighter than the vast majority of passenger cars currently on the road."

Even tho it is an aluminum block, it's still DOHC and all the turbo components will push the weight up FAST. I like your estimates.

Buy the stuff, I'll design it to work, and I'll get a few buddies who can weld better than me to help fab it up (I'm good at machining, but not that great at welding).... oh, but I'll need the use of your Corrado for a few months since I'd have to do this in what little free time I have. Don't worry, I won't drive it too much.

Because you can. Why fix up a 1960's Buick? Why stuff a Chevy small-block into a Ford Model T? Why even bother with a Model T? They're really old. Get it?

Unless they're actually using the quattro system. I hope so. Otherwise, I'm not as impressed.

Quote from BBQ yeah but that would make the car topheavy in combination with that big engine. such a shame for a golf.
Well, it's a Rallye, so it already has a rear differential. Using the longitudinal quattro system would just be adding some more weight in the same spot. Like I said before, there are ways to balance out the front-to-rear weight bias. There are ways to lower the center of gravity too. I have no idea if they are going to do any of that, or if they even care, but it's possible.

i mean it was cool but on a good road a Golf G60 could probably not a have a problem losing it. A Northstar hung in front of the front axle of a Golf probably doesn't do much for handling.
but i admit it was damn cool.
