Isn't it funny how in almost every other race, correct me if im wrong, Q2 times would be the fastest. But come the last most important race of the season and boom fastest times are in Q3. Personally I think the race tomorrow will come down to tires like the ICE MAN said.

Should be a good spectacle.

Brazilian GP - Qualifying session

Interlagos, 20th October 2007

F.Massa: 1st 1.11.931 13 laps chassis 263
K.Raikkonen: 3rd 1.12.322 13 laps chassis 262
Weather: air temperature 29/32 °C, track temperature 46/47 °C, sunny

Ninth pole for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro in seventeen qualifying sessions run this season and the sixth for Felipe Massa. This is the sixth time that a Ferrari driver will start the Brazilian Grand Prix from the top slot on the grid, the second in a row courtesy of Felipe, who brings his total of career poles to nine, boosting the Scuderia's all-time total to 195.

Jean Todt: "The final qualifying of the year has brought us our ninth pole in this championship, the sixth with Felipe, while Kimi, with a last lap that was a bit on the complicated side, takes third place which nevertheless sees him in a strong position for tomorrow's race. This season has been a snapshot of a special season that has witnessed a very close fight between us and our main rivals. We are well aware of the importance of the result of the Brazilian Grand Prix. As we have said we will do our utmost to the very last lap to try and get Kimi to take the Drivers' title for which he is still in the running. Felipe, who for various reasons is out of the running as a title contender, wanted to make his mark in some way on a season that has been very positive for him, setting a fantastic pole, in front of an exceptional Brazilian crowd that has always supported Ferrari with great affection. For Felipe, today's result is also a nice way for him to celebrate in front of his people the fact he now has a long term extension of his contract with the Scuderia."

Felipe Massa: "It's fantastic to be on pole again in front of my fans: to feel their affection and to see them celebrate in the stands is really amazing. The car was very competitive and I managed to get the most out of it. I hope to win tomorrow, but obviously I will do whatever is needed to help the team in its fight for the Drivers' title. I am sorry not to be fighting for it myself, but I think in any case I have had a good season."

Kimi Raikkonen: "Of course it would have been better to be on pole position but third place is certainly no bad thing and leaves me in a good position for tomorrow's race, also in light of the strategy we have chosen and the performance of the car. On my final flying lap, I lost precious time at turn 4 because of Hamilton: it is a real shame but there is no point in recriminations over what has happened. I am confident that I will be able to keep my chances alive right to the end."

Luca Baldisserri: "It was a great qualifying, with Felipe who drove a splendid lap in Q3. All weekend, our Brazilian has been strong and today that has been confirmed. Kimi was also very competitive: a shame that he had a few problems with traffic on his last run which cost him precious time. We can count on a good car, on two drivers in great positions on the grid and on a suitable strategy. We will try and get the best result possible and then do the maths at the end. Thanks in advance of the end of the championship to Shell for the invaluable technical support they have given us this year and indeed in the past."

2007 BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX QUALIFYING

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton will start Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo, the final round of the 2007 World Championship, from the front row of the grid. In an exciting qualifying, Lewis set a time of 1min12.082 and was second fastest, 0.151 second behind pole position. Fernando Alonso qualified fourth fastest with a time of 1min12.356.

LEWIS HAMILTON
"A fantastic last run for me which could have seen me possibly on pole. Overall I am happy with today’s qualifying. The car is working well, and I feel really comfortable. Obviously it was a very close and tense session, but the team did a good job in making sure that we both got that final fuel burning lap. I am quite confident and relaxed for tomorrow, and I know what I have to do to win the championship. My focus is not on winning the race but the title."

FERNANDO ALONSO
"Obviously I would have liked to be on the front row, but it was not to be. We made some changes to the car for qualifying but unfortunately they didn’t work as well as we thought they would and as a result I was not totally confident with the car. However as we have seen in China a lot of things can take place during a long race, so we will have to wait and see what happens tomorrow."

RON DENNIS
"Both Fernando and Lewis did a great job in qualifying. We obviously cut it fine to ensure that both drivers got an additional fuel burning lap, but it all worked as planned. Fernando and Lewis had the same advantage, and its now really in their hands. It was obviously good for the crowd that Massa got pole, but we are trying to be disciplined and focus on the race and winning the World Championship with one of our drivers. The whole team look forward to the race which hopefully will be exciting for all the fans."

NORBERT HAUG
"A good basis to start this championship deciding race from. Lewis starts from the first row for the 12th time this season and Fernando is just 30 thousandths of a second behind Kimi on the second row. It will be a tough challenge, and the entire team is working hard to achieve the last and decisive step in the World Championship."

Controversy over Hamilton 'block'
Saturday, 20, October, 2007, 23:43

Lewis Hamilton escaped sanction after a controversial end to qualifying when the Ferrari team felt that the McLaren driver had disturbed Kimi Raikkonen’s final Q3 flying lap.

Hamilton emerged from the pits following his last tyre change just as Raikkonen was powering onto the back straight in the midst of his last hot lap.

The McLaren driver looked as if he might impede Raikkonen’s entry to turn four, but saw him in time and stayed on the inside, giving Kimi the racing line into the corner.

The Finn then got a little out of shape in turn four and went on to qualify behind Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa and Hamilton.

In light of the 10-place grid penalty imposed on Fernando Alonso at Monza last year for impeding Massa – when the Ferrari driver was never closer than 93 metres to the Spaniard’s Renault approaching the Parabolica corner – there seemed every possibility that Hamilton could find himself sweating on a third stewards’ enquiry within a fortnight.

Ferrari brought the matter to the attention of race director Charlie Whiting but, on being told that Hamilton had no case to answer, saw no point in lodging a protest.

Hamilton apologised to Raikkonen after the session but insisted he had done his best to stay out of the way.

“I came out and, obviously, you have to keep to the left of the white [blend] line,” he related. “The team came on the radio and said that I should be coming out pretty close to Kimi.
The speed I was doing, with the mirrors vibrating, I couldn’t really see if he was there and at the time I first looked he wasn’t.
I thought I would stay where I was because he might have been there and we might have crashed, so I just stayed on the inside and waited for him to appear.
He did, and so I had to brake and bale out otherwise I would have impeded him if I had taken the corner.”

Raikkonen, asked whether Hamilton’s car had been a distraction and a factor in him losing time in the second sector of the lap, said: “For sure it didn’t help...”

McLaren team boss Ron Dennis said: “There wasn’t actually an incident. I think we were very aware Kimi was on a quick lap.
Lewis can’t have impeded him because that was Kimi’s fastest mid sector time and on the second run he was overall quicker than on his first run.
I don’t think the data supports there being any impediment.”

There was then an extraordinary exchange between Hamilton and the correspondent of French newspaper L’Equipe, when Lewis was asked whether he thought he could do whatever he liked so long as he apologised.

The journalist, Anne Giuntini, said to Hamilton: “You never showed him clearly that you would give him the track free.”

To which Lewis countered: “What do you want me to do, put the indicator on?”

“You know exactly...” said Giuntini.

“I did the best job I could to get out of the way,” Hamilton insisted. “And I did apologise to him if I did get in his way.”

Giuntini continued: “Is that what you call the best job?”

“Yes,” replied Hamilton.

“As a sportsman?” she persisted.

“Yes,” he retorted. “How are you at your job? Are you the best at your job? You have never made mistakes...no?”

Later on, the best line came from the Ferrari press officer as British journalists sought to file copy while interrupted by England’s disallowed try in the Rugby World Cup final, being screened in the Interlagos press room.

As the judges considered the TV footage, Ferrari’s Luca Colajanni piped up, with a wry smile on his face: “At least they investigated it...” (ITV)
