 Why did BMW used the 2002 name?

 its pretty similar to current bmw names actually. the 20 is for the engine and the 02 designates that it has 2 doors. there was also 1502, 1602(originaly the 1600-2),1802 and then the 4 doors were 2000, 1800 ect.
