Why does BMW use a V8 in their M3 GTR? Those Porsche boys seem to be upset with the V8 in the M3 GTR because it is more powerful than the 911s.

I don't really know ,but I think becuase the v8 makes more power(20 more than the porsche)and has a more tractable power band, and basically is a better racing engine then the 6 cylinder,(the V8 is a purpouse built race engine) well thats my 2 cents, sorry if i'm wrong just taking a guess.

it might be more powerful the the porsche's but the porsche handles better brakes better, and probably is a better car.

Not it wasn't, that's why they cried foul....TOO purpose built to be a GT class racer....
The V8 although only makes about 20 more horses than the I6 version of the GTR, but because of the bigger displacement, more of that power are avaliable at lower rpm and therefore, the usefulness of the engine increases. Plus since this is a purpose built race motor, it's is actually lighter and more compact than the I6 and give the car better balance...

If the competition had a V8 and was beating you, wouldn't you be upset? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Look at those power figures man...I'm a die-hard atmo six advocate myself; they have shown many a time that they can tango with cheap jap turbo sixes. But that V8 is insane...I think that power output out of a 4.0 litre V8 justifies its use. Then again, German tuner Nowack ( http://www.nowack.de) manage to extract 400+ horsepower from the S51 Inline 6 of the standard M3...thus begins another conspiracy theory. Bimmers rule.

porsche uses an engine they use in production cars and their beef was that bimmers just up and built a race spec engine that stretched the rules they're complaint was they were using a stock modified engine and bimmers wern't giving the bimmer an unfair advantage, i don't blame them if i was having my ass handed to me over and over by this bad ass, I'd sure as hell want to know why.

In reply to to message posted by screwamericancars, (nice name, by the way, hehe) yep, it's rumoured that the next M3 will be V8 powered, as the S51 6 cylinder has pretty much had its privates tuned off. I hope this won't eventuate though...the current M3 engine was new in the E36, I just hope it hasn't come to the end of its life this early. Plenty of German-based tuners can wring a few extra kilowatts out of the S51, but BMW argue that this extra power comes at the price of reliability and durability, which I can readily believe. Then again, Nowack added a stronger driveshaft and other various bits 'n' pieces to counter the 300+ kilowatts, so who knows, maybe the world's best inline 6 will get another lease on life. There's also talk of a turbo version...I'd prefer a V8 if the situation was that desperate; strapping a turbo to the S51 would fly in the face of everything the M3 stands for, and it would be a real shame to see that sort of thing happen. I'm sure BMW have foreseen this and have a new 6 in the works somewhere...let's keep our fingers crossed.

I think you have getting out of ur mind. and ur metal head creation is too much for M3, no way BMW will put a turbo in a M3, they are in business, not trying to kill everything off the road, beside i have no clue where u heard this from... and M3 now use a S54 engine not 51........ 300+kW is nothing now

S54, yes, I stand corrected, thankyou. The talk of a turbo M3 was hearsay I have to admit, just something I had heard. Hence "There was talk of..."

i think that the v8 offers better balance than an inline-6. also it would have a broader band of horsepower. i believe that there are turbo m3's just not on sale from bmw...what's wrong with turboing an m3..i think its perfectly ok.

Sorry, old link: http://www.nowack-tuning.de
Funny, they still quote the 0-60 as 4.8 seconds...in a M3 with over 300kW? Sure, buddy.

300+ kilowatts is nothing?! Out of an ATMO INLINE 6, 300kW is phenomenal! As far as I'm aware, even the standard M3's 252kW is unsurpassed as far as atmo sixes go, Mercedes doesn't get close and Porsche can only muster 236kW from their 3.6 litre flat 6...an engine which is, in my mind, equally well-engineered as the S54. On the American front, the LS6-spec LS1 V8 manages just over 300kW, and it has 2.5 litres more displacement! 300kW is nothing? Whatever floats your boat.
