Why should it need a V8?
Unlike american companies, companies like Honda don't need to rely on the ancient tool of capacity to build a great engine.
Part of the greatest appeal of the NSX is Honda's engineering philosophy. Much like Ferarri, Porsche and BMW, Honda build great engines though perfection of engineering rather then relying on huge capacities or forced induction.
This is part of the reason why these brands have a reputation for building some of the best drivers cars in the world.
The extra weight of a larger capacity engine in a car like the NSX would likely taint the outstanding handling ballance of the car by increasing the weight over the rear wheels and potentially knocking the weight distribution out of wack.
I personally love the fact that the Honda uses an n/a V6. It makes it even more of an amazing feat that this car continues to remain a performance legend 15 years after it's original release.
Much in the same vein as the Lotus Elise, the NSX is one great group of parts working together to create a single great maching - unlike many other makers who seem to rely primarily on their engines to create their product (Dodge Viper, anyone?).
