A Hydramatic transmission is not a manual transmission. The Hydramatic is a automatic transmission wich uses fluid couplings, while the Dynaflows and Powerglides used torque conventers.

All of the first Hydramatics were 4 speeds from 1939 through the middle '50s. There were Hydramatics with Dual Range, wich meant you had several drive ranges on the shift quadrant and that you could lock in certain shifting patterns such as 2nd gear (for snowy or icy roads) or you could lock it in 3rd for descending hills. I believe this Caddy used that system.

Cadillac, Oldsmobile and Pontiac used the Hydramatic (4 speed), Buick used the Dynaflow (3 speed) and Chevrolet used the Powerglide (2 speed).

keep the faith
