it just seems so much easier to place in longitudinally.
Machines were mice and men were lions once upon a time, but now that it's the opposite, it's twice upon a time.

Placing the engine sideways like this helps keep the weight more inside the axles for a lower polar moment of inertia (translating to more agile cornering).

Also, the rear-end of the Miura is very short compared to say the Diablo which has a long rear-end and almost no nose. If the Miura's engine had to be mounted longitudinally it would not have had that lovely long nose.
Ask the man who owns one!

The engine is placed horizontally in order for the engine and gearbox share the same oil, which was inspired by the mini. It also keeps the car very short.

Some say you get better torque because the flywheel is better positioned to the drive wheels

tranverse, not horizontal. Horizontal only works with straight engines ie, 1 bank. Tranverse mean the cylinders are lined from left to right on the car. This helps reduce the wheelbase, thus better cornering.

it was actually place transversley to keep the body length down, as simple as that
MaLteSe: Chocolate on the outside, Sweet on the inside! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ***FERRARI RULEZ*** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Indeed. But don't bother with him cutlass. He is a male in his late 20's who drives a Civic from the early 90's and has put Supra tail-lights on it and a frontal body kit, along with a tin-can exhaust, and a dirt cheap, overly large spoiler. All to compensate for his lack of self worth and pathetically useless dick. Oh and he comforts himself in the pseudo belief that Japanese cars are the Gods of all other cars because deep down he knows that Civics, Corollas, and hopefully an Accord are all that he will ever be able to own. Its all a ridiculous attempt to inflate his self esteem before he finally realizes that he is nothing but a clown and a mockery and runs over his own head with his 4 thousand dollar Civic."
