In 1956, Abarth had already built up an extensive reputation as a premier tuner of Fiat engines and was branching out into many classes of motor sport. To compete in the 750cc class of the Grand Touring Championship, Abarth commissioned Zagato to rebody the Fiat 600 into a purposeful racecar.

While the Ferrari GTO was heralded for winning the Division 3 World Touring Car Championship, the Fiat Abarth OT 1300 nearly matched its performance in Division 1. This small car won many important victories for Abarth including the 1966 and 1967 Division 1 World Championships.

To promote their extensive catalogue of Fiat aftermarket products, Abarth created this 500 to showcase show fast they could make an entry level car go. Afterwards, Fiat was impressed enough to order 100 copies and offer them through the local dealers.

With the introduction of the Abarth twin cam 982cc engine came the 1000 Biabero. It used many of the same design principles from the 750 Record Monza and 700 Biabero models which were produced in earlier years. These were specially built race cars that employed Fiat components and were tuned for motor sports.

After modifying Fiat's 500/600 line for nearly a decade, Abarth became one of the most sought after and ambitious Fiat tuners. Made in partial agreement with Fiat, these 1000 Berlina Corsa's represented the last and most potent evolution of these models. As such, the 1000 benefited from all the versions which came before. SO much so, the 1000 raced successfully up to 1970.

Turin, 25th September 2009-Abarth introduced its latest racing gem at the 51st Sanremo Rally. The new Abarth 500 R3T will lend its name to a promotional rally trophy in 2010, due to join the two track events (European and Italian) planned for the Abarth 500 Assetto Corse.
