Compared to the original Saab 9-5 engine, the unit powering the Saab 9-3 Aero is equipped with a new camshaft on the exhaust side, new and sturdier pistons, new gudgeon pins, new, sturdier connecting rods and new fuel injection valves. The exhaust valves are made of Nimonic, which is a nickel alloy with excellent heat resistance. The Saab 9-3 Viggen is equipped with valves of the same type.

Saab has given its newcomer a designation from the company's aviation history. The Viggen name - Swedish for thunderbolt - is also the designation for the Saab 37 Viggen jet fighter. The delta shaped Saab 9-3 Viggen symbol on the car's front wings is reminiscent of the 'double v' shape formed by the wings of the Viggen jet fighter.
