The Abt Golf GTI: aggressive conversation topic from Kempten

For generations, the VW Golf GTI has thrilled fans of aggressive and sporty, but still driveable cars. Following delivery of the first new generation GTI models in November, Abt Sportsline presented its version of the timeless original at the 2004 Essen Motor Show. As world-wide leader for tuning for vehicles from the Volkswagen group, Abt Sportsline gave the GTI additional power, greater aggressiveness, even more sportiness.

Upon first glance the Abt GTI is distinctly different – a complete body kit including a carbon fiber front spoiler lip, side skirts, rear skirt and a rear muffler with four chrome end pipes are some of the outward changes Abt made to the car.

Under the carbon fiber hood, the influence of the engineers and designers from Kempten is continued: the power of the 2.0T FSI power unit increases to 230 hp (147 to 170 kW) with 310 nm (338 ft lbs) of torque. The Abt Golf GTI is equipped with an Abt sport brake system.

The Abt sport suspension kit, which is not only adjustable in height, but also in rebound and pressure, makes for optimal road holding. Abt sport SP1 wheels in measuring 8.5 x 19 inched with corresponding Dunlop tires ensure improved contact between technology and asphalt.

One detail which is presented at Essen for the first time and will be topic of conversation: Abt Sportsline has developed swing doors for its version of the GTI much like the cars they prepare racing. The team from Kempten once again presented itself as one of the most successful German teams in the current season: for the first time the Bavarians clinched the team title in the DTM in 2004.
