From 1961 foward, Ferrari focused on building rear-engine sportcars. After a short development period of the 246, Carlo Chiti designed three new rear-engined sportcars: the 196SP, 248SP and 286. The 248 SP was built around a new Ferrari V8. With a new crankshaft, displacement was increased resulting in the 268 SP.
