In 1965, Lamborghini offered as an option, the larger 4-litre engine in the 350 GT that turned it into the 400 GT.

The engineers at Lamborghini increased the stroke from 77 to 82 for a total displacement of 3929cc. This brought over power from 270 to 320 bhp at 6500 rpm.

Only 23 versions of the 400 GT were made. They were a interim stop gap between the 350 GT and 400 GT 2+2. As such features like the twin headlights and front bumper overriders were first fitted to this model.

1965→1966 Lamborghini 400 GT

1967 Lamborghini 400GT Interim 0526 – sold for $341,000  – This particular example, chassis 0526, is among the last of the “Interim” 400GTs produced, and it is also quite significant as one of the last cars bodied by Carrozzeria Touring before the Milanese coachbuilder ultimately went into liquidation. The 400GTs intended for the US market, including the car offered here, were fitted with four round headlights, front bumper over-riders and left-hand drive.

The prior owner acquired 0526 in 2002, and Brian Anderson of Oceanside, California restored it to concours-quality standards. It quickly earned a number of trophies on the show field, including Best in Class at the 2007 Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance in the face of all-Ferrari competition. More than merely a “trailer queen,” however, this 400GT has also benefited from a rebuild of its matching numbers V-12 engine, with a fully sorted electrical system. Further proof of its excellence was provided in numerous classic tours, including the California Classic, where it performed without fault.
