Ford asked design chief E.T. \u201cBob\u201d Gregorie if he could build a one-off body on an old Model A chassis that could be used for family outings to the Southhampton beach.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"intelliTXT\">Copying the wood-paneled themes of the station wagons which the company had been producing for years, Gregorie utilized expensive mahogany plywood sourced from Ford\u2019s wartime production plant that had been used to build gliders. Gregorie\u2019s charming creation became the envy of many upper-level Ford executives and prompted the design of a similar production convertible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/1946%e2%86%921948-ford-super-deluxe-sportsman\/1946_ford_superdeluxesportsman1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-215687\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-215687\" src=\"http:\/\/supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1946_Ford_SuperDeluxeSportsman1.jpg\" alt=\"1946\u21921948 Ford Super Deluxe Sportsman\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Sportsman Convertible proved to be the only brand-new design for Ford in 1946, as all automakers largely resumed their pre-war models to quickly meet the overwhelming demand created by the conflict\u2019s production moratorium.<\/p>\n<p>Poised atop Ford\u2019s Super Deluxe series and minimally produced with a mere 2,274 examples, the Sportsman was adorned with a host of standard luxury amenities that served to further bolster its desirability.
