For the first time, Citro\u00ebn will grace the 18th fairway as a featured marque at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d\u2019Elegance, scheduled for Sunday, August 26th in Pebble Beach, California. The Pebble Beach Tour d\u2019Elegance poster, painted by Barry Rowe, commemorates this moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cInterest in Citro\u00ebn among collectors has seen exponential growth in recent years, and the Concours is pleased to showcase custom coachwork Citro\u00ebns that offer the best of French technology and design,\u201d said Concours Chairman Sandra Button.<\/p>\n

Citro\u00ebn\u2019s iconic spaceship-like DS made its debut at the 1955 Paris Auto Show, where the unmistakable sheet metal garnered over 80,000 orders by the end of the week. The futuristic DS platform featured revolutionary hydro-pneumatic suspension, as well as hydraulic systems for the brakes, steering, and transmission. These groundbreaking advancements made the DS one of the most stable autobahn cruisers ever created. Moreover, the unique style of the DS made it an attractive canvas for coachbuilders such as Henri Chapron; custom Citro\u00ebns subsequently sustained the art into the 1970s.<\/p>\n

Citro\u00ebn enthusiast Jeffrey Fisher likens Citro\u00ebns to couturier dresses — \u201cbecause they featured some of the highest number of interior and exterior permutations for a car ever.\u201d The Tour poster features three cars from Fisher\u2019s collection that illustrate the progression of the Citro\u00ebn DS from middle class family car to postwar work of art.<\/p>\n

The 2018 Pebble Beach Tour poster marks Barry Rowe\u2019s 20th anniversary as an artist for the Concours.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

At the forefront of the poster is the two-tone blue 1966 Citro\u00ebn DS 21 Chapron Le L\u00e9man Coup\u00e9, one of roughly 24 produced. This very car (chassis 4350020) graced the stage at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show and represents the pinnacle of Citro\u00ebn custom coachwork. The green 1967 DS 21 Chapron Cabriolet d\u2019Usine was transformed to convertible specification straight from the factory while the Yellow DS 19 exemplifies the essence of the original DS saloon. All three of these Citro\u00ebns have been fully restored by renowned Citro\u00ebn expert Vincent Crescia, who currently operates out of the very building that housed his father\u2019s Citro\u00ebn dealership.<\/p>\n

Barry Rowe, a member of the Automotive Fine Arts Society (AFAS), explores the evolving relationship between the automobile, society, and daily life. In portraying cars, he is lauded for his use of light and color. With Rowe\u2019s work, the Concours celebrates the debut of Citro\u00ebn as a featured marque.<\/p>\n
