It used to be that <\/span>you<\/span> drove your car… and not the other way around. Now it seems the car of the future will drive you, or perhaps <\/span>fly you to your destination<\/span><\/a>. It’s enough to make any vintage car aficionado shed a tear or two.If we had our way, classic cars would rule the road.<\/span><\/p>\n

H<\/span>ere are some classic car designs <\/span>that we wish we w<\/span>ould see more of today\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Classic Hot Rod Decals<\/span><\/h2>\n

Even while the fifties heralded the demise of the hood ornament, it was a <\/span>fantastic time<\/span><\/a> for Hot Rod cars. Hot Rod<\/span>s<\/span> refer to any type of car that is refitted with pieces from other vehicles. <\/span><\/p>\n

One theory as to the origin of the name “Hot Rod” has it that “hot” refers to parts being stolen, and “rod” to the vehicle. <\/span>And so<\/span> “Hot Rodders” were those who modified their cars for speed. These modifications also extended to the car’s appearance with a unique paint job, or a vinyl decal. <\/span><\/p>\n

Today, getting a decal on your car is still possible. Companies that provide <\/span>c<\/span>ustom <\/span>w<\/span>all <\/span>d<\/span>ecals<\/span><\/a>\u00a0also provide vinyl decals for cars. And there is nothing that speaks of your love for <\/span>H<\/span>ot <\/span>R<\/span>odding than a flamed side splash. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hood O<\/span>rnaments <\/span><\/h2>\n

The hood ornament is one feature that <\/span>has disappeared over the decades<\/span>. <\/span>Its<\/span> original purpose was<\/span> as a motometer,<\/span> to gauge engine temperature. With time, car designers began to add a little flair to the motometer<\/span> by dressing it up with fancy <\/span>embellishments<\/span>. By the 1920s, the temperature gauge <\/span>was no longer placed on the hood of the car and <\/span>had <\/span>made its way <\/span>to the car’s dashboard<\/span>, where it was easier for drivers to see<\/span>. But the hood ornament continued to be used as a cap for the radiator, which was contained under the hood. Popular <\/span>hood ornament <\/span>designs in the twenties<\/span> and thirties<\/span> included animals and winged creatures. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sadly, by the late fifties, car makers began to conceptualize a different kind of car. And today, <\/span>hood ornaments are a rare sight<\/span><\/a> in car showrooms. Among the reasons cited are pedestrian safety concerns, aerodynamics, and vandal problems. But despite all of that, nothing says Americana like a shiny and sleek sculpture on your hood. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Big Boxy Convertible<\/span><\/h2>\n

Car<\/span> manufacturers <\/span>may <\/span>say <\/span>otherwise<\/span>,<\/span> but<\/span> the big boxy convertibles popular in the fifties and sixties<\/span> is design at its best<\/span>. One such beauty that perfectly depicts this kind of car is the <\/span>1959 Cadillac Eldorado<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>If there was <\/span>a<\/span> car that could encapsulate the essence of what a car is supposed to provide for its owners, it was this one. <\/span>Even way back <\/span>in ’59<\/span>, it<\/span> was <\/span>considered <\/span>a luxury car <\/span>and to this day has maintained that status<\/span>. With only 1<\/span>,<\/span>320 of these cars in existence, sighting a 1959 <\/span>Cadillac Eldorado<\/span> on the road <\/span>is<\/span> akin to a holy experience. <\/span>Something like<\/span> coming across Bigfoot in Florida. <\/span><\/p>\n

Over its generations of owners, Cadillac Eldorados have created a look for what we now think of as the quintessential American car. <\/span>This line of cars have<\/span> spanned <\/span>10 generations<\/span><\/a>, from 1953, and the first generation of Cadillacs to the tenth generation, spanning 1992 to 2002. On the 50th anniversary of their <\/span>car, the company decided to bring this run to a close. In a fitting tribute to the first generation of Cadillacs, the last generation <\/span>was<\/span> produced in the same colors as the first, white<\/span> cars and red cars. It\u00a0<\/span>was a nod to where it all began.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

So even while electric and self-driving cars seem to be here to stay. And these alternatives are <\/span>easier on the environment<\/span><\/a> and possibly safer (the jury is out on that one), <\/span>design <\/span>wise they could learn from years gone by. And if nothing else, indulging in some nostalgia may be just what classic car lovers need to brace themselves for the future<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
