{"id":301578,"date":"2021-01-16T18:09:44","date_gmt":"2021-01-16T23:09:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/?p=301578"},"modified":"2024-01-24T14:58:19","modified_gmt":"2024-01-24T14:58:19","slug":"amelia-concours-announces-weird-wonderful","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/amelia-concours-announces-weird-wonderful\/","title":{"rendered":"Amelia Island Concours (2021) &#8211; &#8220;Weird &#038; Wonderful&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>On\u00a0May 23, 2021, the\u00a026th\u00a0Annual Amelia Island Concours d&#8217;Elegance will feature a special class that will showcase The Amelia&#8217;s affection for encompassing a wider view of the established normal and traditional Concours concept.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>With the previous \u201cCars of the Cowboys\u201d and \u201cWhat Were They Thinking\u201d classes being appreciated despite their non-traditional status, this year\u2019s\u00a0special class will be the &#8216;<em>Weird &amp; Wonderful<\/em>&#8216;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>So what can we expect in this class? Well, the first car starts in the 40s with a styling and design genius.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-dots\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">1948\u00a0Tasco\u00a0Prototype\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The new class will feature the 1948 Tasco Prototype, designed by Gordon\u00a0Buehrig, being the designer of the <a href=\"https:\/\/rmsothebys.com\/en\/auctions\/mo11\/monterey\/lots\/r277-1935-auburn-model-851-supercharged-speedster\/192287\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Auburn 851 Speedster<\/a>, and his \u00a0\u201ccoffin-nose\u201d Cord 810\/812.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>He used\u00a0Tasco\u00a0as an acronym for &#8216;The American Sportscar Company&#8217;. His project was the result of following the trend of having aircraft-inspired automobile designs. It was the same year that tailfins were found on the Cadillacs, inspired by the P-38, and the same year that for the first time, sports cars were raced along the streets of <a href=\"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/us-vintage-grand-prix-watkins-glen-2017-report-photos\/\">Watkins Glen<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/Jl9TO8TYzxw<\/div>\r\n<figcaption>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC1X10TZ5uDtq8nYcyQsHRMA\">Newfields<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The intention was for\u00a0Tasco\u00a0to be part of the races that were usually joined by imported, pre-war car models.\u00a0Buehrig\u00a0went beyond having an aircraft-inspired exterior as he designed the two-seat cockpit with hand controls and a binnacle. The front wheels had individual, steerable fairings that are reminiscent of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boeing.com\/history\/products\/p-26-peashooter.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1932 Boeing P26 \u201cPeashooter\u201d fighter<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Tasco-1948-1-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-605597\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Tasco-1948-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Tasco-1948-1-1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Tasco-1948-1-1-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Tasco-1948-1-1-100x64.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Tasco-1948-1-1-293x188.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0Tasco\u2019s contours had aviation perspectives when seen from both inside and out.\u00a0Buehrig\u00a0may have been inspired by the prewar\u00a0Coachcraft\/Stengel Ford and John\u00a0Tjaarda\u2019s\u00a0personal 1940 Lincoln Zephyr cabriolet as the\u00a0Tasco\u00a0was given a couple of transparent, lift-off roof panels.\u00a0 Buehrig\u00a0took the design one step further, however, as he made his design with a couple of removable transparent roof panels that were anchored to the solid center section.\u00a0\u00a0He had invented \u2013 and patented \u2013 the T-Top.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Two decades later, Chevrolet introduced the T-Top on their 1968 Corvette. It was then that\u00a0Buehrig\u00a0showed Chevrolet\u00a0that he has patented his \u201croof with movable parts\u201d under\u00a0US Patent # US2556062A (1951).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Buehrig\u00a0eventually belittled his own prototype stating that it was designed more by a \u201ccommittee of investors\u201d than by his own hands. The\u00a0Tasco\u00a0was built on a <a href=\"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/1951-mercury-custom-coupe\/\">1947 Mercury chassis<\/a> and engine and unfortunately never reached production, much less Watkins Glen. Its long hood and short cabin proportions are very similar to the classic pre-war European GTs.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-dots\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">2008 Vetter Extra Terrestrial Vehicle\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Mike Vetter states he has never completed a design course in his life but designed the Extraterrestrial ETV by hand in Florida and sells them to people tired of the usual proportions on automobiles.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"ETV-EXTRA TERRESTRIAL VEHICLE!\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oOLLHI3O4SQ\" width=\"885\" height=\"498\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"ETV-EXTRA TERRESTRIAL VEHICLE!\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oOLLHI3O4SQ\" width=\"885\" height=\"498\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\r\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC04GJ9A65JFoH57s5xJuJCQ\">CAR HISTORY<\/a><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>In styling contrast to the 1948 Tasco, the fiberglass body of the ETV is devoid of a flat surface or a straight line. Under the skin of the ETV is a real car with bits and pieces sourced from many cars like the Chevy Cobalt SS, Chevy Cobalt, Toyota Echo, Chevy Aveo, Toyota MR2, Honda Insight, and a Porsche Boxster.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The purpose of the ETV was to be a real car and to be used as such, but\u00a0Vetter admits that the ETV is not aerodynamically optimized, particularly with its rounded back.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Vetter-1_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-605598\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Vetter-1_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Vetter-1_1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Vetter-1_1-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Vetter-1_1-100x50.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Vetter-1_1-585x293.jpg 585w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Vetter-1_1-293x146.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\r\n<figcaption>2008 Vetter Extra Terrestrial Vehicle. The concept might\u00a0be weird, but his execution was admirable especially since Vetter\u00a0seems to have the skills matched with the courage to create a car for himself, and for those who want the attention that the seemingly floating car delivers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-dots\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">1963\u00a0Corvair\u00a0Futura\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0Corvair\u00a0Futura is the perfect answer to\u2026 something. And thats what makes\u00a0it perfect for the 26th annual\u00a0Amelia\u2019s Weird &amp; Wonderful class.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0Corvair\u00a0Futura was based on a\u00a0Corvair\u00a0Greenbriar van, but the center-steer Futura does not fit in any automotive category. The Futura is capable of confusing even the most enthusiastic automotive guy.
