Cost was never an object with\u00a0Hispanos\u00a0and it shows<\/em>.\u202f<em>While fewer than 300 survive,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0still a grand tale. Many of the players in the Hispano-Suiza\u00a0saga are royalty; there are war heroes, movie stars, all sorts of international celebrities and a few sports heroes. It all helps make Hispano-Suiza\u00a0one of the most legendary, elegant, desirable and exotic cars in history.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<cite>Founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours\u00a0d\u2019Elegance,\u00a0Bill Warner<\/cite><\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>La\u00a0Fabrica\u00a0de\u00a0Automoviles\u00a0la Hispano-Suiza\u00a0was incorporated in 1904 in Barcelona from the amalgamation of two firms\u00a0that were both suffering financial distress.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Header-22-1_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-607730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Header-22-1_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Header-22-1_1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Header-22-1_1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Header-22-1_1-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Header-22-1_1-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Header-22-1_1-370x247.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Header-22-1_1-293x195.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Swiss engineer, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marc_Birkigt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marc\u00a0Birkigt<\/a>,\u00a0who was only\u00a026-year-old\u00a0at the time, was an executive in both of the companies.\u00a0Birkigt, who had engine and chassis patents, was named factory manager of the new firm named Hispano-Suiza\u00a0(Spanish-Swiss).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Birkigt\u00a0would drive from the Hispano works in Paris to the Barcelona factory. The drive achieved two things:\u00a0he enjoyed the commute in his car,\u00a0and it provided a\u00a0real-world test session\u00a0for the cars.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The long drives allow him to confirm or negate his assumptions and prejudices giving him the experience firsthand of the quality of his creations.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Achieving Hispano quality was a high target indeed. In 1909, the factory was granted permission to name the T15, the \u201cAlfonso XIII.\u201d In 1911, Queen Victoria Eugenia, his consort, gave him a white T15 that had gold-plated fittings and golden wire wheels as a birthday gift.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Hispano-Suiza\u00a0racing team had three cars enter the Coupe de l\u2019Auto race in 1910 where they finished with an impressive first, third, and sixth\u00a0places.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 1911, equipped with the 3620 cc four-cylinder,\u00a0the new race-centered T30 had the capability of going 80mph making the Alfonso XIIIi one of the initial real sports cars.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Birkigt\u00a0returned to Barcelona when World War I\u00a0commenced. There, he\u00a0created a water-cooled V-8 aircraft engine that became the soul and spirit of the marque.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 1916, the new, simple, and brilliant aluminum block Hispano-Suiza\u00a0V-8\u00a0he designed was exactly what France\u2019s war ministry needed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>His powerful \u201cmonoblock\u201d Y12 engine, an\u00a011.76-liter, water-cooled SOHC V-8 was used for the French <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SPAD_S.VII\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S.P.A.D. VII <\/a>which was the pillar of the French fighter squadrons\u00a0and helped them claim air superiority against the Central Powers. Photo credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/3.0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PpPachy<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A famous French Aviation Unit during World War 1 was the <em>Escadrille<\/em> 3\u00a0<em>Les Cigognes<\/em>\u00a0(&#8216;The Storks&#8217;). Pilots from\u00a0Groupe de Combat 12\u00a0assumed the name and put pictures of storks in various stages of flying on their aircraft.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The insignia found its way into the Hispano-Suiza\u00a0machines. The initial car to sport the La\u00a0Cicogne\u00a0Volant mascot (designed by Sculptor Francois\u00a0Bazin) was the six-cylinder 6.6-liter OHC H6. Andre Dubonnet, a former fighter pilot, and Duesenberg Grand Prix racer (also an Escadrille No. 3 veteran), drove an H6 at the\u00a0Boillot\u00a0Cup of the Boulogne race, claiming victory. It\u00a0was so beautifully presented that a proud J12 owner requested his\u00a0carrossier\u00a0to install glass tops in the hood to display the beauty of the V-12 for all to see. By 1934, it became an 11.3-liter V-12 engine that could produce 250 hp.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Despite the \u201cAlfonso XIII\u201d giving Hispano its sporting spirit and the stork becoming its immortal mascot, it would be one of the final Hispanos that sealed the grand marque\u2019s iconic status.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The 1938 Xenia Hispano-Suiza\u00a0Dubonnet equipped with an H6B 6.5-liter straight-six is considered by many to be the most glamourous Hispano-Suiza.\u00a0It displayed an exquisite Jean Andreu-designed coachwork that was produced by <em>Carrosserie<\/em> Saoutchik.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/1937-Hispano-Suiza-H6C-Dubonnet-Xenia4-1-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-607726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/1937-Hispano-Suiza-H6C-Dubonnet-Xenia4-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/1937-Hispano-Suiza-H6C-Dubonnet-Xenia4-1-1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/1937-Hispano-Suiza-H6C-Dubonnet-Xenia4-1-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/1937-Hispano-Suiza-H6C-Dubonnet-Xenia4-1-1-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/1937-Hispano-Suiza-H6C-Dubonnet-Xenia4-1-1-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/1937-Hispano-Suiza-H6C-Dubonnet-Xenia4-1-1-370x247.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/1937-Hispano-Suiza-H6C-Dubonnet-Xenia4-1-1-293x195.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\r\n<figcaption>1937 Hispano-Suiza H6C Dubonnet Xenia<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 7px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historicracing.com\/driverDetail.cfm?driverID=5348\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andre Dubonnet<\/a> named the Xenia after his late wife Xenia Johnson who passed in 1936.
