{"id":303540,"date":"2021-03-14T03:40:32","date_gmt":"2021-03-14T07:40:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/?p=303540"},"modified":"2024-12-06T03:50:53","modified_gmt":"2024-12-06T03:50:53","slug":"1929-duesenberg-model-j-disappearing-top-torpedo-by-murphy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/1929-duesenberg-model-j-disappearing-top-torpedo-by-murphy\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare 1929 Duesenberg Model J \u2018Disappearing Top\u2019 Torpedo by Murphy to be Auctioned"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color: #eaf0f4;\">Heading to auction on May 22 at the 2021 Amelia Island RM Sotheby&#8217;s Auction is a rare 1929 Duesenberg Model J \u2018Disappearing Top\u2019 Torpedo by Murphy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Pasadena-based coachbuilder <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_M_Murphy_Company\">Walter M. Murphy\u2019s<\/a> most famous design on the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/duesenberg-model-j\/\">Duesenberg Model J<\/a> chassis, being the \u2018Disappearing Top\u2019 Convertible Coupe, saw\u00a0only\u00a025 examples of the car produced. Often, Murphy completed it in bare aluminum that extended forward through the beltline and down the center of the car\u2019s cowl &#8211; allowing it to shine in the Californian sun.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">1929 Duesenberg Model J, Chassis 2199\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Murphy only produced six units of the \u2018Disappearing Top\u2019 Torpedo Convertible Coupe. On the car, only the fenders and valances are painted, given a rich dark blue finish.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>According to the research done by the late Duesenberg historian Ray Wolff, the first owner of chassis number 2199 was David Gray of Santa Barbara, California.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 1903, Mr. Gray\u2019s father, John, was sagacious enough to invest $10,500 in a new automobile company that Henry Ford founded. Elements changed included adding skirted JN-style fenders and smaller\u00a017-inch wheels.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The redesign caught Hollywood&#8217;s attention<em>,<\/em> where it made its silver screen debut in a memorable scene from the movie<em>\u00a0She Had to Eat.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In the next few years until the late 1940s, it had a few Southern Californian owners, including Robert J. It is said that Los Angeles dealer Bob Roberts used the engine for parts. Over the years, it was noticed at an early ACD Club meeting in Avon, Pennsylvania, and through the mid-1950s, it would been seen in Auburn. After a long ownership of 34 years, Mr. Coverdale parted with his prized possession in 1985.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Chassis no 2199 was brokered through Bob Adams and Tom Barrett, and for a short time, it was owned by the late Rick Carroll. Eventually, the Blackhawk Collection acquired the Duesenberg, where it went through a restoration process before being presented to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club.
