If\u00a0you have\u00a0ever been fortunate enough to see the Ingram family\u2019s Porsche collection,\u00a0you will\u00a0realize that\u00a0all\u00a0those elements come into play:\u00a0it is\u00a0a magical place that carries historical significance\u00a0with a promise of a magnificent future ahead.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Bob Ingram and his wife, Jeanie, embarked on their collection in the late 1990s, amassing a collection of 80\u00a0exquisite Porsche models<\/a> that greatly represent\u00a0a captivating cross-section of the marque\u2019s cars for the past seven decades. The Ingram couple from Durham, North Carolina, share their Porsche passion with their sons,\u00a0Rory\u00a0and Cam.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Touring the collection is like a trip back in time. The extensive breadth of the collection spans from one of the early Coup\u00e9s<\/a> that came from\u00a0Gm\u00fcnd, Austria, to the latest masterpieces from\u00a0Zuffenhausen<\/a>\u00a0like the 991 generation Porsche 911 Speedster.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cWe are incredibly proud and at the same time feel very\u00a0honored\u00a0that we are allowed to take care of these cars.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\nBob Ingram<\/cite><\/blockquote>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Bob Ingram, who is 78 years old shares, with enthusiasm, how he always takes into consideration the cars\u2019 former owners, especially for the older models in his collection.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\u201cIt is in that spirit that we want to preserve the cars for the future.\u00a0There is no other company in the world that can draw on such a loyal fan base,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Cam, his son adds:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cThe most exciting thing is the stories behind the cars. Through our collection, we become part of contemporary history, of the cars and the people,\u201d<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

During the 1960s, the Porsche 906 was driven with great success amongst the factory team and private racers alike.<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Ingrams desire their collection to be a living entity, manifesting itself in two ways.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

First and foremost is that the cars in their collection are regularly driven, be at club meetings, racing events, or just on weekend family outings.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Almost all the cars in their collection are registered for the road, even the racing cars like the Porsche 906 Carrera 6 from the 1960s, except for one: the exclusive new edition of the Porsche 935<\/a>. There were only 77 of the examples produced, and the 935 can only drive the car during training sessions on private racetracks or at club sports events.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The second critical aspect of the Ingram collection is that it serves as a setting for charity functions. The Ingrams not only love to cultivate their passion personally but also share it with others.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cOur goal was to create a place where people could feel comfortable: with art, a beautiful setting, and many memories.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\nJeanie Ingram<\/cite><\/blockquote>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Origin of the Ingram Collection\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Upon driving one of his many Porsche cars, Bob Ingram regularly feels like\u00a0he is\u00a0back in 1971, when he\u00a0first was provided the opportunity to\u00a0ride in a Porsche 911 S of an acquaintance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\u201cWhen it started, a symphony of mechanical sounds began. I was completely nervous; I stalled the engine at first, but the feeling of the space, the smell, and the sound were unlike anything else.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

At the end of the day, he said to his wife,\u00a0\u201cOne day I\u2019ll drive a Porsche.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It would take some time before the dream blossomed into a reality. The young family had more pressing matters to attend to. Ingram\u00a0grew up in what he described as \u201chumble circumstances\u201d in the small city of Charleston.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

His first working experience was at the corner shop beside the schoolhouse that his single mother managed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\u201cI saved it all up to buy the coolest ride in town when I finally got my licence\u201d<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

He had always been a \u201ccar guy\u201d who would venture to the Indianapolis and Sebring races and run the occasional drag race against his friends.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

After\u00a0completing his studies, Ingram worked as a pharmaceutical sales representative- a job that would get him to the highest positions in the industry. He became the CEO of one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies globally, and the position brought with it the demands of a top executive post.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\u201cIt was a wild\u00a0time but\u00a0sticking together as a family has always been the most important thing,\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\r\nJeanie Ingram<\/cite><\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Although officially retired, Ingram did not progress into\u00a0retirement, still actively involved as an investment firm partner.\u00a0Without his day job, however, he finally had time to dedicate towards his passion: Porsche. It started with a dark blue 964-generation Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, which a 993-generation Carrera Coup\u00e9 soon joined in Amethyst Metallic. By the late 1990s, a 993 Turbo S Coup\u00e9 was added.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Not everything has been smooth sailing for the Ingrams, though. In April 2019, a gas pipe exploded in front of the warehouse where they kept a large part of the collection. Two people tragically died, the building beside it was destroyed completely, and the Ingrams\u2019 hall roof collapsed, bringing devastation to half of the precious cars below.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\u201cIt was the saddest day of our lives. Our thoughts are still with the people who were hurt and the families who lost loved ones.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\nBob Ingram<\/cite><\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Rebuilding After Tragedy\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The first clean-up operations revealed the ugly truth: four cars seemed so devastatingly damaged that it appeared they were unrecoverable, including the extremely rare Porsche 356 B Carrera GTL\u00a0Abarth.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It was the timing additionally, however, that contributed further to the Ingrams woes. The\u00a0Abarth\u00a0was scheduled to participate in the world-famous, invitation-only Pebble Beach Concours\u00a0d\u2019Elegance<\/a>\u00a0competition, which was barely four months away.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Standing in front of the fire-damaged vehicle, he looked at his son, Cam, and said, \u201cCan we get this done in time?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cAnd I had to admit to him that I didn\u2019t know,\u201d Cam Ingram shared. \u201cThat was hard on all of us.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Ingram and his team almost lived inside the workshop for the next few weeks as they spent grueling 16-hour days in their quest to rebuild the car from scratch.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cWe were lucky that despite its extensive racing history, it never had\u00a0any serious damage from accidents or anything like that. The\u00a0aluminum\u00a0body was still in excellent condition, as was the chassis. It\u2019s only because it didn\u2019t have the damage typical of racing cars its age that we were able to accomplish in four months what would otherwise take years,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\nCam Ingram<\/cite><\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The team was able to successfully complete the repairs just in time for it to make a gallant appearance at Pebble Beach.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cIt was a very emotional moment. The whole experience brought us even closer together as a family,\u201d<\/p>\r\nBob ingram<\/cite><\/blockquote>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

One of the important lessons Bob taught Cam was to ask himself the question, \u201cWhat are my goals and what am I willing to do for them?\u201d For them, the goal was clear:\u00a0the preservation of the collection\u00a0\u2013\u00a0for the family, for the future, and for the love of Porsche.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

All their valiant work was rewarded at the Concours\u00a0d\u2019Elegance\u00a0as they were rewared with a class win for the perfectly restored 356 B Carrera GTL\u00a0Abarth.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Cam Ingram recalled the almost surreal moment as he drove the winning car with his father across the Pebble Beach grass to receive the trophy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
