The Mike Hailwood\/David Hobbs JW Automotive Gulf Racing 1970 Le Man’s entry, the iconic\u00a01970 Porsche 917K Coupe, is to be offered in Monterey 13-14 August by RM Sotheby’s.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The word \u2018iconic\u2019 is loosely applied to many cars these days, but the worthiness of the term can sometimes be questioned. The 1970 Porsche 917K, chassis # 917 031\/026, being the vehicle that challenged at the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans with Mike Hailwood and David Hobbs behind the wheel has earned the term iconic.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The vehicle, wearing the blue and orange Gulf livery, is the very car that starred in the original racing footage employed in Steve McQueen\u2019s Le Mans movie.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

RM Sotheby\u2019s will offer this astonishingly iconic racing vehicle and ‘Le Mans\u2019 film star<\/a> at its Monterey sale on 13-14 August.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Porsche 917<\/a> needs no introduction to any motorsport enthusiast, with the early 917K coupe form commonly considered \u2018The World\u2019s Greatest Sports Car.\u2019 It features a flat-12 cylinder, air-cooled engine that can launch the vehicle to speeds over 230 mph.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Porsche 917 set an example for engineering, performance, and design, taking endurance sports car design to brand-new levels.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

JW Automotive Engineering \/ Gulf Racing team<\/a> had Chassis \u2018026\u2019 built as one of their three 1970 24 Hours of Le Man’s race entries. The example was unique for having a modified version of the Gulf livery, with its whole roof, sprayed orange down to the beltline. This differed from the other cars with the orange centerline stripe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Displaying race number \u201822\u2019, David Hobbs<\/a> and Mike Hailwood drove the vehicle during the Le Man’s race. In challenging wet circumstances, the vehicle completed 49 laps, but on the 50th lap, Mike Hailwood aquaplaned and crashed, forcing the car to retire.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Subsequent to Le Mans, the factory repaired the chassis and it was re-numbered \u2018031\u2019, being rebodied as a Porsche 917 Spyder with the purpose of competing at the 1972 European InterSerie Championship.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Privateer Ernst Kraus used the vehicle during the 1971-1972 European race series. Throughout the 1973 InterSerie Championship, it remained competitive despite stiff competition, obtaining numerous notable outcomes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In 1974 it retired from competitive racing where it entered the Chandon Collection, residing there until 1988.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The current custodian of the example obtained the Porsche in Spyder design and has since completely restored the vehicle back to its original Gulf-liveried Le Man’s coupe specs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n
