{"id":307581,"date":"2021-06-04T17:00:46","date_gmt":"2021-06-04T21:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/?p=307581"},"modified":"2024-12-29T18:48:01","modified_gmt":"2024-12-29T18:48:01","slug":"mercedes-28-95-hp-sport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/mercedes-28-95-hp-sport\/","title":{"rendered":"1921 Targa Florio &#8211; 100 years Since Mercedes 28\/95 hp Sport Class Win"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>On May 29, 1921, Max\u00a0Sailer\u00a0drove the Mercedes 28\/95 hp Sport under the piercing Sicilian sun for a little less than seven and a half hours to complete the Targa Florio.\u00a0Sailer\u00a0claimed second overall, the fastest lap time, and a class win in the touring cars over 5 liters.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>He drove for more\u00a0than 432 kilometers against remarkably formidable\u00a0competitors who were mostly Italian drivers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The 1921 <a href=\"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/history-of-the-targa-florio-race-profile\/\">Targa Florio<\/a> race was held on a 108-kilometer circuit at the north of the Italian island on unpaved mountain roads. Drivers were required to complete four laps of the challenging track which contained around 1,500 bends, and an 800-meter altitude change.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_002.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-597642\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_002.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_002-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_002-100x63.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_002-293x185.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a>\r\n<figcaption>Behind the wheel of the Mercedes 28\/95 hp Sport is Max Sailer.<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 42px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Since the race&#8217;s beginning in 1906, the 1921 Targa Florio was considered\u00a0to be\u00a0the first edition of the road race where professional works teams competed for the first time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) had two of their 28\/95 hp Sports cars sent to Sicily. The challenge commenced even before the race began as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Max_Sailer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Max\u00a0Sailer<\/a>\u00a0himself drove his racing car to Sicily. Even though the distance to Sicily was 1,300 kilometers away as the crow flies, it became 2,000 kilometers on the road. However, this practice was rather normal in motorsport at the time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Adding to the challenges were high temperatures and dust, as well as the great risk of tire punctures from hoof nails littering the road. In fact, it was this very same risk that\u00a0hindered them from claiming the overall victory. In a sales bulletin from DMG on June 6, 1921, it stated:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p>\u201cSailer\u00a0had to change tires nine times, while the absolute winner of the Targa, who arrived just two minutes ahead of him in a special Fiat racing car, did not have a single flat tire.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>What was remarkable was despite the nine punctures, the Stuttgart-bred racing driver was able to complete the Targa Florio in 7 hours, 27 minutes, and 16.2 seconds, running an average speed of 57.9kph.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_004.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-597644\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_004.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"497\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_004.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_004-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_004-100x66.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_004-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_004-293x194.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a>\r\n<figcaption>Driver Max Sailer and co-driver Hans Rieger in the Mercedes 28\/95 hp Sport at the Untert\u00fcrkheim plant<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 48px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>To manage the grueling conditions of the Targa Florio,\u00a0Sailer\u00a0was fortunate to rely on a new technology: the Mercedes 28\/95 was the first Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) vehicle\u00a0that incorporated four-wheel brakes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The new system had provided a noticeable improvement in braking power, resulting in improved driving safety and precision. The brakes used were drum brakes which were visible behind the wire-spoked wheels.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Mercedes 28\/95 hp Sport success with four-wheel brakes\u2019 is an excellent example of how racing directly affects new vehicle technology.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Starting June 1921, the 28\/95 hp Sport was added to their range of standard models available. Their successes at the Targa Florio became a great marketing tool for the model.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A Viennese car dealer, Mercedes Auto-Palast, had a full-page ad in the Austrian \u201c<em>Allgemeine\u00a0Automobil-Zeitung\u201d dated November 6,\u00a01921,<\/em>\u00a0with the slogan \u201cSeven races-seven victories!\u201d The ad also announced the arrival of the\u00a0model,\u00a0saying, \u201cSix-cylinder model 28\/95 hp, 1921, has arrived!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>From 1923, the production version of the top model 28\/95 hp was also equipped by DMG with the \u201call-wheel brake system\u201d.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_003.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-597643\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_003.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_003.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_003-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_003-100x71.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_003-293x208.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In time, the four-wheel brake system was adopted as a standard in automotive engineering all over the world.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The difference in performance between the\u00a0rear axle brakes and the four-wheel brake system was so enormous that in the mid-1920s, there was actually a discussion in Germany on establishing a warning sign on these vehicles to warn the other road users ahead of time. On September 12, 1925, the \u201cAllgemeine\u00a0Automobil-Zeitung\u201d reported this with the headline, \u201cCaution, four-wheel brakes!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mercedes 28\/95 hp Sport<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Mercedes 28\/95 Sport was the next step in the high-performance luxury vehicle evolution. Before the First World War, Paul Daimler designed the Mercedes 28\/95 and unveiled it in 1914.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Mercedes 28\/95 was equipped with a 66 kW (90hp) in-line six-cylinder engine that had a 7,280cc displacement, an overhead camshaft, and overhead valves that were arranged at an angle.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_005.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-597645\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_005.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_005.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_005-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_005-100x71.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_005-293x207.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a>\r\n<figcaption>Contemporary photo of the chassis of the Mercedes 28\/95 hp<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 39px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>By 1915, around 25 units were produced by DMG though in 1920, after the end of the war, production restarted.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>For the 1921 racing activities, the Mercedes 28\/95 hp was\u00a0extensively modified by the engineers that it was considered to be a separate model adding a \u201cSport\u201d suffix.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_006.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-597646\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_006.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_006.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_006-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_006-100x61.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21C0158_006-293x177.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a>\r\n<figcaption>Mercedes 28\/95 hp Sport with a two-seater body.<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 44px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Some of the upgrades done included the increase of engine output to 81 kW (110hp) and reducing the wheelbase to 3,065 millimeters\u00a0for\u00a0better maneuverability.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The driver\u2019s seat was lowered, as was the cooler, which was also lowered and placed further back. With the mechanical supercharger, the racing car produced 107 kW (145hp) at 2,000 rpm.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Further Victories at the Targa Florio<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Mercedes and later Mercedes-Benz captured several further victories at the Targa Florio in later years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 1922, Count Giulio\u00a0Masetti\u00a0won using a 1914 Mercedes 115hp Grand Prix racing car which they\u00a0enhanced,\u00a0with Max\u00a0Sailer\u00a0claiming victory in the class of touring cars with displacement over 4.5-liters using the supercharger equipped Mercedes 28\/95 hp.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 1924, using a Mercedes 2-liter racing car with a compressor, Christian Werner claimed victory.
