First introduced in 1981, the Audi Quattro would revolutionize rally racing; and subsequently the trajectory of production car technology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>It was the first rally car to effectively and reliably use all-wheel drive and would go on to to be a benchmark for future cars fitted with such a drivetrain.<\/b> This inaugural generation of the Quattro is often referred to as <i>\u2018Ur-Quattro\u2019<\/i>. The &#8220;Ur-&#8221; is a prefix derived from the German word for \u2018original\u2019, therefore denoting in its entirety, \u2018The Original Quattro\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, it would be replaced with the Audi Sport Quattro in 1984, after shortcomings of the aforementioned car &#8211; such as its <i>relatively large weight and dimensions<\/i> &#8211; became too apparent. Taking advantage of the lenient homologation requirements of the time, Audi engineers went full tilt in creating a successor to the Quattro, doing so after producing the required 200 Sport Quattro cars.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1985\" style=\"text-align: center;\">1985 Audi Sport Quattro S1&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>An updated version of the Audi Sport Quattro &#8211; given the <i>\u2018S1\u2019<\/i> moniker &#8211; was introduced at the end of <b>1984<\/b>. To meet homologation requirements for the improvements, Audi first had to produce an additional 20 examples per Group B regulations. However, the true power input was believed to be <b><i>in excess of 500-horsepower<\/i><\/b> since the turbocharger was complemented with a <i>recirculating air system <\/i>which also reduced turbo lag<i>.<\/i>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The enhanced engine &#8211; in conjunction with the weight reduction and revised aerodynamics &#8211; propelled the car from <b>0-100 km\/h in a staggering 3.1 seconds.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>What supercars are doing today, the Sport Quattro S1 was doing in the mid-\u201880s. The speed, acceleration, and traction of the car would unsurprisingly, be its biggest claim to fame.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"Defining\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Defining The Way We Shift<\/h3>\n<p>During some rally races, certain examples of the Audi Sport Quattro S1 were equipped with a then-experimental version of the dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Afterall,<b> Blomqvist was the 1984 World Champion, having achieved this feat using the vastly inferior Quattro<\/b>. It during this race that the Sport Quattro S1 was able to put on full display, the levels of power and traction it would become best known for.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"Lasting\" style=\"text-align: center;\">A Lasting Legacy<\/h3>\n<p>Shortly following the events at the Rallye de Portugal &#8211; where 3 spectators were killed, and 30 were injured during a racing incident &#8211; Audi announced that they would no longer be participating in rally racing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Although Audi&#8217;s Rally Program only spanned 5 years, its influence on motorsport and the greater automotive community are still apparent today.<\/b> With four championship titles and the groundbreaking technologies it introduced, the Sport Quattro and its variants were an undisputed success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The 1985 Audi Sport Quattro S1 is still the most powerful rally car ever built. <\/b>The lessons learned from building and racing the car would later be effectively applied to Audi\u2019s participation in GT and Touring-car racing, with success to follow in <i>Trans-Am, DTM <\/i>and<i> BTCC<\/i> series.<\/p>\n<p>The Sport Quattro S1&nbsp; would also be triumphant in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. <b>In 1985, Michele Mouton set a world record time<\/b>, in the process of becoming the first female driver to achieve this feat at the event. Sporting an aggressive aerodynamic kit which included massive front and rear overhanging bumpers, widened fenders and an enormous rear wing, the S1 always arrived on set looking the part. <b>In my The wheelbase was shortened dramatically by 32 cm in an attempt to make the car even lighter and more agile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Sport quattro, as it happened, was fated not to enjoy any great successes, even in its final evolution stage, the S1. Its technical features nonetheless earned a place in rallying history if only because of their extreme character. The officially quoted power output of the five-cylinder aluminium-block engine was 350 kW (476 bhp), but with the recirculating air system that kept the turbocharger turning over at a high speed, the true figure was probably in excess of 500 bhp at 8,000 rpm. With a moderately high final drive ratio, the S 1 (which weighed only 1,090 kilograms) could accelerate from a standstill to 100 km\/h in 3.1 seconds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See full&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/1985-audi-sport-quattro-s1-gallery\/\">1985 Audi Sport Quattro S1 Gallery<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some of the cars were equipped with a power-shift gearbox \u2013 a forerunner of today\u2019s DSG technology. The car had a lattice-tube structure clad with sheet steel and plastic panels. For the sake of better weight distribution, the radiator, fan and alternator were banished to the rear of the car. Vast wings and spoilers had the task of increasing down force on fast sections of the route; the brakes had a water spray cooling system.<\/p>\n<p>In the spring of 1986 came the end for the Group B cars with their boundary-pushing technology. Audi decided not to enter for any further events in the series. Following serious accidents, the international organizing body FISA resolved to change the rules and permit only near-series Group A cars to take part.<\/p>\n<p>As it happened, the S1 was able to celebrate one final triumph: in 1987 Walter R\u00f6hrl took this car with its 441 kW (600 bhp) engine up the Pikes Peak run in Colorado, USA, with its 156 bends and maximum altitude of 4,301 metres.<\/p>\n<p>This victory was already achieved by the S1 in the previous years by Mich\u00e8le Mouton in 1985 and Bobby Unser in 1986, giving Audi a hat-trick in this imposing American hillclimb event, the \u201cRace to the Clouds\u201d.
