A Deep Dive"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The Bugatti Veyron &#8211; Origins of the Supercar<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the birth of the automobile in 1886, when German inventor Karl Benz patented his Benz Patent-Motorwagen, <\/span><b>the pursuit to build a better automobile has fueled the imaginations of engineers and designers around the globe.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Since the dawn of the 20th century, the vision that fueled those early automotive pioneers to push the envelope of speed and handling has resulted in the creation of some truly remarkable driving machines.\u00a0 Now, at the dawn of the new millenia, <\/span><b>the evolution of the <\/b><b><i>\u201csupercar\u201d<\/i><\/b><b> has given birth to machines that our automotive forefathers could never have imagined.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the crown of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cfastest production car\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continues to shift from manufacturer to manufacturer even today, <\/span><b>there was a supercar that emerged in the first decade of the 21st century<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that captured the attention and the imagination of the automotive community and set a whole-new standard of elegance, performance and exclusivity in the supercar market &#8211;<\/span><b><i> the Bugatti Veyron.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<h2>Before the Veyron &#8211; Molsheim is the home of the Bugatti family, the birthplace of the brand and the modern headquarters of the Bugatti company.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Ettore Bugatti founded his company in the then German town of Molsheim.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Although Molsheim is located in the Alsace region of France today, the area was recognized as part of the German empire between 1871 and 1919 and again between 1940 and 1944.\u00a0 Despite being a French city today, the area is predominantly populated by German-speaking citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bugatti continued to manufacture cars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (including such famous Bugatti&#8217;s as the Type 41 <em>\u201cRoyale\u201d<\/em>, the Type 57 <em>\u201cAtlantic\u201d<\/em> and the Type 55 sports car) <\/span><b>until his death in 1947<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 The Bugatti company had already been on a slow financial decline that started (possibly coincidentally) after the death of Ettore\u2019s son, Jean Bugatti in 1939.\u00a0 Without a successor to lead the factory in the wake of Ettore\u2019s passing, <\/span><b>there was a great deal of uncertainty as to the company\u2019s future.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bugatti Company attempted a brief comeback in the mid-1950\u2019s under the direction of Roland Bugatti Ettore\u2019s twenty-five year old son. (1987\u20131995)<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/1991-bugatti-eb110-gt\/\">1987<\/a>, Italian entrepreneur <\/span><b>Romano Artioli acquired the Bugatti brand and established Bugatti Automobili S.p.A<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Artoli commissioned a factory to be built in Campogalliano, Modena, Italy with the sole intent of building the best and fastest supercars in the world.\u00a0 Because Artioli recognized that Modena, Italy possessed many highly-qualified employees (afterall, he built his plant in the neighborhood of Ferrari, Maserati, De Tomaso and Lamborghini),<strong> he manufactured a state-of-the-art automobile manufacturing plant<\/strong> there and set to work producing his first car &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/1991-bugatti-eb110-gt\/\">Bugatti EB110 GT<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_358122\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-358122\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-358122\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Bugatti-EB110-GT.jpg\" alt=\"The Bugatti EB110 GT.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Bugatti-EB110-GT.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Bugatti-EB110-GT-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Bugatti-EB110-GT-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Bugatti-EB110-GT-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Bugatti-EB110-GT-770x514.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Bugatti-EB110-GT-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Bugatti-EB110-GT-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Bugatti-EB110-GT-1155x770.jpg 1155w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Bugatti-EB110-GT-370x247.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Bugatti-EB110-GT-293x195.jpg 293w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Bugatti-EB110-GT-1400x934.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-358122\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Bugatti EB110 GT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>The EB110 GT is, in many respects, a direct predecessor to the Veyron, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">despite being an Italian engineered and manufactured automobile whose appearance shares only a passing resemblance to the younger car.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/1991-bugatti-eb110-gt\/\">EB110<\/a> had some commercial success internationally, it came to market during a time when both North American and European economies were in recession.\u00a0 <\/span><b>Poor sales of their car combined with poor economic conditions globally forced Bugatti S.p.A. to fail.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Operations ceased in October, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/1991-bugatti-eb110-gt\/\">1995<\/a> and the state-of-the-art factory was ultimately sold to a furniture-making company, which itself went defunct prior to physically moving into the factory.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>German Engineering and the Birth of the Veyron<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there is some debate among automotive enthusiasts as to the Veyron\u2019s official country of origin, it is important to note that <\/span><b>the car was released under the Bugatti Automobiles\u00a0 marquee,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a French high-performance automobile manufacturer.\u00a0 Moreover, the car was physically manufactured in Molsheim, one of the easternmost regions of France.\u00a0 However, it was<\/span><b> designed and developed by a team of German engineers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and financed under the parent company of Bugatti Automobiles &#8211; German-based company Volkswagen AG.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><b>he story of the Bugatti Veyron really begins in May\/June, 1998<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when Volkswagen AG, at the urging of then-chairman Ferdinand Piech, purchased the rights to produce cars under the Bugatti marquee.\u00a0 <\/span><b>Piech had been instrumental in guiding Volkswagen to purchase other luxury marquees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including Lamborghini, the Rolls-Royce factory in Crewe, United Kingdom and the Bentley Marque.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_358124\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-358124\" style=\"width: 1440px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-358124\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/piech-and-bugatti.jpg\" alt=\"Ferdinand Piech, former chairman of Volkswagen AG.\" width=\"1440\" height=\"810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/piech-and-bugatti.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/piech-and-bugatti-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/piech-and-bugatti-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/piech-and-bugatti-100x56.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/piech-and-bugatti-770x433.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/piech-and-bugatti-293x165.jpg 293w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/piech-and-bugatti-1400x788.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-358124\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ferdinand Piech, former chairman of Volkswagen AG.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the urging of then-chairman Ferdinand Pi\u00ebch, <\/span><b>Volkswagen purchased the rights to produce cars under the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bugatti\"><b>Bugatti<\/b><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marque\"><b>marque<\/b><\/a><b> in June 1998.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This followed the earlier Volkswagen purchases of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lamborghini\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lamborghini<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> marque (by VW&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Audi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> subsidiary), the Rolls-Royce factory in Crewe, United Kingdom, and the Bentley marque.\u00a0 As part of the acquisition, <strong>Volkswagen AG purchased the rights to use the Bugatti name and formed Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. in June, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/1999-bugatti-eb218\/\">1999<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the financial collapse of the earlier Bugatti S.p.A. in 1995, <\/span><b>Volkswagen A.G. recognized the success of the EB 110 automobile on the world automotive stage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and set about developing a series of concept cars whose technological advances would culminate in the creation of the Veyron 16.4.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The first of these concepts was developed between October 1998 and September 1999.<\/strong>\u00a0 Bugatti S.A.S. (or simply Bugatti from here on out) introduced a series of three Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed concept vehicles:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/1998-bugatti-eb118\/\">EB 118<\/a>,<\/strong> a 2-door luxury coupe which was first presented at the 1998 Paris Motor Show.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_358125\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-358125\" style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" configuration and each was powered by a Volkswagen designed W18 engine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While each of these prototypes included elements (most especially the 18\/3 Chiron) that would make their way into the production Veyron, <strong>it was the EB 18\/4 Veyron prototype that most closely resembled the architecture of the actual automobile.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The EB 18\/4 Veyron concept vehicle was first introduced in October, 1999 at the Tokyo Motor Show.\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developed in-house under the direction of Hartmut Warkuss, the car featured a a three-bank W18 engine (the same engine previously introduced in all three of the earlier Veyron prototypes as well.)\u00a0 <\/span><b>The Bugatti EB 18\/4 concept became the design study<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that would eventually lead to the creation of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 production vehicle in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/2006-bugatti-164-veyron\/\">2005<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_358129\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-358129\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-358129\" href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/2006-bugatti-164-veyron\/\">2000<\/a>, a modified version of the EB 18\/4, now called the EB 16\/4 Veyron, was presented at motor shows in Detroit, Geneva and Paris.\u00a0 This variant of the car <\/span><b>featured a four-bank W16 engine architecture,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> though most of the rest of the car was a carry-forward from the 18\/4\u2019s exterior and interior architecture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2001, Bugatti presented a study of the Veyron 16.4 at the IAA in Frankfurt,Germany. <\/span><b>\u00a0This car boasted an output of 1,001 horsepower (736 kW),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an eight-liter engine displacement, four turbochargers and a torque of 1,250 Nm. The response to the car was overwhelmingly positive.\u00a0 It was later that same year that the Volkswagen Group made the executive decision to begin production of the Veyron.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Production of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_358130\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-358130\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-358130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/2005_Bugatti_Veyron_16.4.jpg\" alt=\"The 2005 Bugatti Veyron roadworthy prototype of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 was completed.<\/strong>\u00a0 This earliest production example was identical to other examples of the eventual production model with only a few, minor exceptions.\u00a0 <strong>This first car was as much a test-mule for the final product as it was a production prototype<\/strong> that could be introduced to would-be consumers of this ultra-exclusive vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because no other automobile had been developed as a direct predecessor of the Veyron (save for the four aforementioned prototypes) there were barely any parts, components or systems that could be used or re-purposed during its development.\u00a0 <strong>Everything had to be developed and fabricated from scratch.<\/strong> Moreover, given the incredible performance specifications the Veyron was expected to achieve, all of the inner workings of the car had to be custom-designed to ensure exacting tolerances and achieve the highest level of performance during any driving condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Veyron was developed to meet these specifications:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Produce over 1,000 horsepower<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achieve a top speed of over 250 miles per hour (400 kilometers per hour)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be able to accelerate from 0-100 in less than three seconds<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Above these unprecedented performance specifications (at the time), <strong>it was expected that Bugatti would also be capable of producing a super-car that could double as a luxury car suitable for daily driving.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/volkswagen-0-60-times\/\">Volkswagen<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/does-a-bugatti-veyron-actually-make-1001-hp\/\">Bugatti<\/a> began to navigate the incredibly complex process of engineering this super-car, <strong>they drew on the experiences and knowledge of engineers and designers from other industries including experts in aviation and space travel.<\/strong>\u00a0 It was understood early on that creating such a vehicle would require a team intimately familiar with the extreme forces and speeds that such vehicles as these would require.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, <strong>each obstacle in the Veyron\u2019s development eventually led to the creation and\/or evolution of technologies needed to breathe life into this amazing machine.<\/strong>\u00a0 Considerable technical problems had to be addressed throughout the car\u2019s transformation from development prototype to true production model, and <strong>it would ultimately be another two years before the first Bugatti Veyron EB16.4 would roll off the Molsheim production line.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_358131\" These classic design cues are interlaced with cutting-edge technologies including a retractable spoiler with prominent wings as well as contemporary horizontal headlamps that enhance the car\u2019s unique character.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mechanically, <strong>the Veyron featured an 8.0-litre, quad-turbocharged, W16 cylinder engine.<\/strong>\u00a0 Each cylinder has four valves (totaling 64 valves in-all). The Veyron features magnesium shifter paddles behind the steering wheel that can allow the driver to manually shift the transmission in semi-automatic mode.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Volkswagen Group, <strong>the Veyron\u2019s W16 engine produces 987 horsepower (736 kW, 1,001 PS) and generates 922 lb.\/ft. (1,250 Nm) of torque.<\/strong> German officials recorded the Veyron\u2019s top speed at 253.81 miles per hour (avg.) during test sessions on April 19, 2005 at Volkswagen Group\u2019s private Ehra-Lessien test track.\u00a0 However, <strong>the car\u2019s <em>\u201cnormal\u201d<\/em> top speed is listed at 213 mph (343 km\/h).\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whenever the Veyron reaches a speed of 137 mph (or more), <strong>the hydraulic suspension lowers the car until it has a ground clearance of approximately 3.5 inches (9 cm).<\/strong>\u00a0 At Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport edition at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d\u2019Elegance.<\/strong>\u00a0 The car featured a targa-top. To compensate for the lack of a standard roof assembly, the car had a number of reinforcements integrated into its body\/chassis. It also received a number of small refinements to its running lights and windshield assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Each Grand Sport model came with two removable tops<\/strong> &#8211; a color matched hardtop and a canvas-fashioned temporary top that can be opened and collapsed like an umbrella.\u00a0 When the hardtop roof was installed, the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport edition had the same top-speed as the coupe.
