This is a fact that he should be very proud of, but something I believe he doesn\u2019t consider his crowning achievement. Since then he has gone on to do equally impressive things. Before we get to those things, let&#8217;s dive into his time at Morgan. The designer landed that job while studying at Coventry University in the UK.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He told me he\u2019d always been interested in cars, especially from a design standpoint. His father was an architect, and being around that kind influence as well as a motoring one (Matt\u2019s father is a bit of a gearhead and car collector), <strong>he was set on a path towards a career in automotive design at an early age.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Early Beginnings<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/001.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-361869 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/001.jpg\" alt=\"Matthew Humphries at a car show \" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/001.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/001-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/001-100x75.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/001-770x578.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/001-293x220.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his second year at Coventry, he sent out his portfolio to numerous automakers. The fact that his work caught the eye of Charles Morgan is no surprise. <strong>Matt focused on British cars in his studies and his portfolio reflected this,<\/strong> specifically the focus was on the traditional British sports car design\u2014long hood, short rear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morgan hadn\u2019t had an in-house designer before. The company had worked with designers in the past with only marginal success, but had focused less on design and more on the engineering of the cars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUp to that point, everything had just kind of been done in an engineering fashion,\u201d Matt told me over the phone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charles had Matt come into the factory and get to know it and the people there and then asked him to <strong>design a car for a friend who wanted a coupe based on the <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/2001%e2%86%922010-morgan-aero-8\/\">Aero 8<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> chassis.<\/strong> Matt sketched some ideas up, went back to the university, returned to Morgan with a clay model of his design, and then presented it to the client.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe said, oh great, love the design. I\u2019ll have it,\u201d Matt said \u201cI thought he was talking about the clay model, so I went back off to university and my studies. Then I got a call one day from a chap in the metal shop [at Morgan], and he said, &#8216;Matt, come down I have something I want your opinion on.&#8217; So, I went down the Morgan factory and they had my clay model in the corner of a workshop and an Aero chassis. <strong>They were trying to scale up the clay model over the chassis.<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/549648.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-361873 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/549648.jpg\" alt=\"AeroMax Concept\" width=\"881\" height=\"508\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/549648.jpg 881w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/549648-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/549648-100x58.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/549648-770x444.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/549648-293x169.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 881px) 100vw, 881px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that point, Matt knew they were going to actually build the car he designed. From then on, Matt came down to the factory to help <strong>turn his clay model into a reality.<\/strong> Matt said it was a traditional process, one that involved him designing parts of the cars and then the craftsmen at morgan making those parts from scratch. Matt said they worked like that for the better part of seven months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the car was completed\u2014<strong>the Morgan <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/2005-morgan-aeromax-prototype\/\">AeroMax Concept<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014Matt said he found himself at 21 years old standing next to the first new car Morgan had created in decades at the Geneva Motor Show surrounded by press.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>It caused quite a stir,<\/strong>\u201d Matt said. \u201cBasically, from that point on I was working more at the factory while I finished my studies and then Charles asked me to come to the factory and become their designer.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Head of Design at Morgan<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_1668.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-361878 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_1668.jpg\" alt=\"Matthew Humphries EVA GT\" width=\"1877\" height=\"1227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_1668.jpg 1877w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_1668-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_1668-1024x669.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_1668-100x65.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_1668-770x503.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_1668-1536x1004.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_1668-293x192.jpg 293w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_1668-1400x915.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1877px) 100vw, 1877px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt said once he was the head of design at Morgan he essentially had to start from scratch because <strong>Morgan had never really had an in-house designer or design studio.<\/strong> He had to create the whole process and team and make everything work with the factory that was already well established.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt started with just myself and I got another designer on board and then we got someone on who was responsible for photography and web design,\u201d he said. \u201cIt ended up by the time I left about 10 years later, we\u2019d integrated design into the factory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt and his team did everything from designing the cars to marketing them and making sure the brand was being presented and represented properly\u2014anything that was concerned with the image or aesthetic of the company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there, Matt and his team were responsible for some of the most influential Morgan models in recent history from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/2009%e2%86%922010-morgan-aeromax\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AeroMax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/2009-morgan-aero-supersports\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aero Supersports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.morgan-motor.com\/3-wheeler\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morgan 3-Wheeler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Matt and his team also designed one of the company\u2019s most ambitious projects to date, <strong>the <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/2008-morgan-lifecar\/\">Morgan LifeCar<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> The LifeCar, for those unfamiliar, was a concept car that utilized hydrogen fuel cell technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/783798.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-361874 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/783798.jpg\" alt=\"Morgan Aero Supersports\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/783798.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/783798-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/783798-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/783798-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/783798-770x513.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/783798-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/783798-1155x770.jpg 1155w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/783798-370x247.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/783798-293x195.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt said it wasn\u2019t an easy thing to do. \u201cThere was definitely pushback,\u201d he said. \u201cI mean, <strong>if you can imagine a 21-year-old with long hair turning up<\/strong> and saying, no you can\u2019t just make it look like that because that\u2019s how it needs to work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said he had to work with the engineering team to get the guys there to understand that everything needs to look a certain way. \u201cIt needs to have an aesthetic and a reason for what it looks like,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just that Bill has bashed a bit of metal so that\u2019s what that looks like. In the modern world, it isn\u2019t that easy with any product.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt said one of the things that allow Morgan to stand out is <strong>the craftsmen who work there.<\/strong> Other automakers aren\u2019t as flexible and creative as the folks that work at Morgan. Matt said it\u2019s amazing to see the guys in the woodshop forming things literally with their hands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He pointed to the seats in the LifeCar as an example. They were made of laminated wood pieces. He said they were part of what Morgan called <strong>\u201cLightweight Luxury\u201d<\/strong> and that they not only served the vital purpose of making a lightweight seat but they looked beautiful as well. That laminated wood method was used in the past, but now it was being used as a purposeful design element with aesthetic appeal. Its use has become ingrained in the company\u2019s designs. It&#8217;s featured in the company&#8217;s current models.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>From Autos to Watches<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-361872 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/6-1.jpg\" alt=\"MHD watches\" width=\"6016\" height=\"4000\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Matt was still at Morgan he was also pursuing other passions. At one point he was asked to do some watch design for the <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lonville.com\/\">Lonville Watch Company<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> At the same time, he was designing the instrument cluster of the Morgan 3-Wheeler.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt said the instrument cluster in the 3-Wheeler was actually inspired by some of the work he was doing on watches at the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>It\u2019s almost designed like two watches for the dash,<\/strong>\u201d Matt said. \u201cThere\u2019s almost two straps to the sides of it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/3-wheeler-6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-361870 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/3-wheeler-6.jpg\" alt=\"the dash of a Morgan 3 wheeler\" width=\"1400\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/3-wheeler-6.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/3-wheeler-6-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/3-wheeler-6-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/3-wheeler-6-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/3-wheeler-6-770x513.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/3-wheeler-6-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/3-wheeler-6-1155x770.jpg 1155w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/3-wheeler-6-370x247.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/3-wheeler-6-293x195.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt\u2019s work with Lonville continued and he really got into watches more and more. \u201cGoing through the design process got me more intrigued, \u201c he said. \u201cIt became a passion and then it became sort of an obsession and then a hobby. I started taking watches apart and customizing them and understanding how the movement is put together. <strong>As soon as you start getting into it, it becomes a real obsession.<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt said there\u2019s something interesting with people who have a mechanical interest no matter what it is\u2014cars, planes, motorcycles, watches. They all get drawn in by how things work. \u201cYou know, I was thinking mechanical watches are like a gearbox in a vehicle, taking the power and slowing it down so it\u2019s released over a longer period of time.\u201d Matt is a perfect example of this kind of curiosity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Designing a Better Machine<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/old-english-white-4--scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-361877 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/old-english-white-4-.jpg\" alt=\"MHD Watches\" width=\"3008\" height=\"2000\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Matt does a bit of both car design and watch design. He owns his own design consultancy business, he\u2019s the head of design at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alcraftmotor.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcraft Motor Company<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Britain&#8217;s electric car company), still involved with Lonville, and <strong>runs <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.matthewhumphriesdesignwatches.com\/\">MHD Watches<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. MHD Watches is a business he runs with his wife.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt said there\u2019s definitely automotive influence in the watches he makes at MHD Watches. \u201c<strong>Any designer takes a history along with them.<\/strong> A lot of what you learn in car design goes into watch design.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt talked about the need in automotive design to keep <strong>tension in every line<\/strong> of the car so that it looks as though the car is already moving even when it\u2019s standing still. He said that every single line should have that feeling, that tension in it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to achieve is having an engineered aesthetic,\u201d Matt said. \u201cSo it looks purposeful while having a very clean, technical look.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt said just like with the work he did at Morgan, he\u2019s trying to make design signatures in his watches. He pointed to what he called the \u201cIn the Red Zone\u201d feature on his watches. If you look at MHD Watches, in the dial, there\u2019s an additional line from the number eight to number 12. That line will always be in MHD Watches products in some capacity. Matt said that design feature is inspired by his father\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/1970-porsche-911-s-2-2-coupe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.2-liter Porsche 911<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/5-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-361871 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/5.jpg\" alt=\"Matthew Humphries Alcraft motors car\" width=\"4961\" height=\"2861\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt said that his designs will always keep evolving. He struck me as someone who can\u2019t help but create.
