{"id":362003,"date":"2020-04-10T21:25:02","date_gmt":"2020-04-10T21:25:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/?p=362003"},"modified":"2024-04-14T02:06:59","modified_gmt":"2024-04-14T02:06:59","slug":"mclaren-m1b-lapping-at-the-nurburgring-gp-circuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/mclaren-m1b-lapping-at-the-nurburgring-gp-circuit\/","title":{"rendered":"VIDEO: McLaren M1B Lapping At The Nurburgring GP Circuit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As people have a lot of time to spend at home, some have taken the opportunity to go through old things and sort them.<\/p>\n<p>YouTuber 19Bozzy92, who you really should subscribe to if you like raw track-side sounds and supercars, hypercars, and racing cars on tracks, found a gem in his old files.<\/p>\n<p>Coming from the Nurburgring GP-Strecke Oltimer Weekend, from August 8 to 10, 2019, he managed to capture a trio of rare beasts: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/1966-mclaren-m1b-gallery\/\">McLaren M1B Group 7 Can-Am Racers<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"McLaren M1B Group 7 \/ Can-Am Racer Roaring on track!\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2POiGJAZZso?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"McLaren M1B Group 7 \/ Can-Am Racer Roaring on track!\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2POiGJAZZso?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Can-Am, or Group 7 in Europe, was a highly unrestricted series that saw some of the most deranged, mental, and powerful race cars from inception in 1966, until the series was cancelled in 1987.<\/p>\n<p>It was also, infamously, a Can-Am prototype, the M8D, that took the life of Bruce McLaren in 1970 when it broke apart during testing, crashing at very high speed into Woodcote Corner on the Goodwood Circuit.<\/p>\n<p>However, the M1B was a shining star of the inaugural season. McLaren had been contacted to develop a prototype for the series as a proof of concept, developing the M1A, in 1965. When interest from other manufacturers arose, the M1B was evolved from the M1A and was entered into competition.<\/p>\n<p>1966 was a very good year for the M1B&#8217;s, losing only to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/1966-lola-t70-mkii-spyder\/\">Lola T70<\/a>&#8216;s entered by Surtees Racing and Roger Penske Racing. Bruce McLaren himself finished third in the inaugural season, behind two legends in Mark Donahue (second) and John Surtees (Champion).<\/p>\n<p>The McLaren M1B was also a success of American and European cooperation. While the chassis, aerodynamics, handling, and development was handled by McLaren, Chevrolet provided the engine.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-362006 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/m1b-2.jpg\" alt=\"1966 McLaren M1B\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/m1b-2.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/m1b-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/m1b-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/m1b-2-100x75.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/m1b-2-770x578.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/m1b-2-293x220.jpg 293w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/m1b-2-1400x1050.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A Chevrolet Small Block gen I 327\/331 90 degree four stroke V8, it developed 550 HP from 6,178 cc (377 cubic inches). It had 4 Weber 48 IDA carburetors, and pushed all its power through a Hewland\/ZF 4 speed manual transmission.<\/p>\n<p>With the lightweight fiberglass and tubular steel frame carrying that much power, the M1B was a bit of a handful in the corners, but was an absolute monster down the straights.<\/p>\n<p>Only 28 of them were ever built, and as far as records show, three have either been crashed or otherwise lost to time, leaving only 25 remaining.
