{"id":369155,"date":"2010-11-17T08:00:10","date_gmt":"2010-11-17T16:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/?p=32280"},"modified":"2024-01-17T12:41:39","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T12:41:39","slug":"rally-nippon-2010-report-and-photo-gallery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/rally-nippon-2010-report-and-photo-gallery\/","title":{"rendered":"Rally Nippon (2010) &#8211; Recap &#038; Photo Gallery"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Rally Nippon 2010 \u2013 A Pleasant Assault On The Senses<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Story and photos by Len Clarke<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/3U2V9485-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-795906\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/3U2V9485-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/3U2V9485-1.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/3U2V9485-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/3U2V9485-1-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/3U2V9485-1-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/3U2V9485-1-370x247.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/3U2V9485-1-293x195.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a>The first weekend of November saw the running of Rally Nippon 2010, an event that, despite being only in its second edition (after debuting in 2009), has become the end-of-season round in the Japanese historic rally season.<\/p>\n<p>Featuring cars that would make any aficionado\u2019s eyes weep, this is a domestic-focused event to rival October\u2019s La Festa Mille Miglia (long established as the country\u2019s most prominent historic event, duly paying homage to its namesake, Italy\u2019s Mille Miglia).<\/p>\n<p>As the name suggests, Rally Nippon is all about celebrating the unique aspects of the beautiful Japanese countryside, much in the way the Mille Miglia does for Italy.The event is no short sprint either, taking in over 1,200kms over a leisurely four days\u2019 running, including, in true European style, stays at some of the most prestigious hotels and lay-bys, all strategically placed along the way.<\/p>\n<p>The whole affair makes for not only the most scenic rally on the vast and varied historic calendar here, but also one of the most enjoyable in which to compete.<\/p>\n<p>Starting in the heart of the country\u2019s modern capital, Tokyo, the event winds its way towards Japan\u2019s ancient seat of government, Kyoto. Organisers NASC have cleverly thought out a route that pleases as much as it challenges, though nothing too hectic as the focus is on pleasure and enjoyment over out-and-out dashing from point to point.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a good concept, and one that resonates well with the entrants, who field machines from Britain\u2019s glory years of the \u201820s and \u201830s with the finest Bentleys, Rileys, Aston Martins and such up against Continental examples from Bugatti and Talbot of the same era.<\/p>\n<p>The field is not limited to that classic motoring period however, with \u2013 as can be expected, the majority of competitors fielding machines from the glorious decades of the fifties and sixties on this well-subscribed event.<\/p>\n<p>A total of seventy machines made the start, situated in the centre of Tokyo\u2019s downtown core, Akasaka. Despite it being a \u2018drive-in, drive-out\u2019 start (uncommon here, but understandable given the busy location \u2013 and on a Friday morning no less) only one car (who shall remain nameless) didn\u2019t make the leaving ramp on time. This is Japan after all. Incredibly well organized is about the simplest conclusion I can make. Again, it\u2019s Japan so everything went like clockwork. Naturally.<\/p>\n<p>Back to the cars: As always, there were a couple of Mercedes-Benz 300SL on hand, de rigeur on an event of this stature, plus an astounding array of Italian beauties from the same decade, including Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Ferrari etc. And there was so much more to feast on besides\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Japan was beautifully represented also (better than I\u2019ve ever seen on a domestic event, in fact), including no fewer than three examples of Toyota\u2019s 2000GT MF10 \u2013 including a convertible, one of the only two examples in existence. Think back to \u2018You Only Live Twice\u2019 \u2013 that car, the one Bond almost couldn\u2019t fit into. Great film. Wonderful car.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Rally Nippon was co-hosted by the Japan Aston Martin Owners\u2019 Club, which brought along a number of their members\u2019 cars, including a few modern examples. That\u2019s one of (the many) great things about this country, everything\u2019s similar, but from a slightly different point of view.
