Sanctioned by Historic Motors Sports Association (HMSA), the LSR Invitational historic races were held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Tuesday, April 10th, 2012. The LSR Invitational saw a field historic race cars tackle the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course in Salinas, California.<\/p>\n

Similar to HMSA Club events, the LSR Invitational featured historic production cars built through 1972 and purpose-built Formula, Sports Racing and IMSA and Trans-Am cars built through the mid-’90s.<\/p>\n

The one-day April LSR Invitational was unfortunately plagued by poor weather that limted track time to the morning sessions.<\/p>\n

The HMSA LSR Invitational at Laguna Seca 2012 field included many notable cars, ranging from Mary Smith\u2019s 1939 Maserati 4CL driven by Paddins Dowling and the 1934 ERA piloted by Mark Gillies to the modern BMW M3 E36 of Henry Schmitt. In between were other samples of the automotive art like Matthew Polk’s 1965 Alfa Romeo GTA, Allen Nichols in his 1971 Brabham BT-35, 1966 Ginetta G4R of Michael Sweeney and the Cooper T52 F-Jr of Jimmy Domingos. Another interesting entrant was Bill Ockerlund’s 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra, reported to be the first factory purpose-built Cobra race car. The Shelby was driven in period by Bob Bobdurant, Dave McDonald, Ed Leslie, among others.<\/p>\n
