A recently discovered 1928 Mercedes-Benz 26\/120\/180 \u2018S\u2019 Type Sports Tourer will headline the Bonhams Goodwood Revival 2012 auction, scheduled for 15th September at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England. The S Type, which has been in the same family ownership from new, is expected to sell for more than \u00a31.5m.<\/p>\n

\u201cBonhams has a strong tradition of offering the greatest discoveries in the collectors\u2019 motor car field and particularly of vintage Supercharged Mercedes. At a time when motor cars in original condition and with impeccable provenance are appreciated more than ever, this one-owner car offers an unrepeatable opportunity for collectors,\u201d said Rupert Banner, the Bonhams specialist who secured the Mercedes-Benz.<\/p>\n

The legendary \u2018Kompressor\u2019 (Supercharger in German) Mercedes\u2019 \u2018S\u2019 series of the 1920s \u2013 with its distinctive scream from the supercharger – re-established Mercedes\u2019 reputation for building fast, luxurious and high quality motorcars. Ferdinand Porsche designed the supercharged 6.8-litre engine which was set in a low-slung chassis frame and adorned with the now iconic Mercedes \u2018V\u2019radiator grille. Capable of more than 100mph, the \u2018S\u2019 was first seen at the N\u00fcrburgring in 1927, where it won in the 5-Litre class and recorded the fastest time of the day at the hands of ace driver Rudy Carraciola.<\/p>\n

Production cars promptly followed after this success and the current owner\u2019s grandfather, himself a noted and pioneering British motorist, would have been one of the earliest buyers of one of these cars. Sold under order number 38130, the \u2018S\u2019 Type was supplied through \u2018The British Mercedes Ltd.\u2019 in London and was bodied by local London-based coachbuilders Cadogan Motors with lightweight fabric sports tourer bodywork. The completed car was registered for the road in May 1928.<\/p>\n

Painted in dark battleship grey, this Mercedes has never been restored, and even retains its original blue leather upholstery in its entirety. A \u2018timewarp\u2019 find that has been parked in the same garage since the 1930\u2019s, and laid up since the 1950\u2019s, its unworn 1928 logbook evidences a passage of ownership within the same family throughout.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a>Bonhams currently holds the public auction record for any Mercedes \u2018S\u2019 series car with the 1929 Mercedes-Benz 710 SSK 27\/180\/250 Sports Two Seater, sold at the Goodwood Revival Meeting in 2004 from the Estate of George Milligen for \u00a34.18m.<\/p>\n

The Mercedes will be exhibited at the Brooklands Double Twelve Meeting on the weekend of 16\/17th June, and at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Meeting from 29th June to 1st July prior to the sale at the Goodwood Revival Meeting on 15th September 2012.<\/p>\n
