The Goodwood Trophy race at the 2012 Goodwood Revival was held Saturday, September 15th at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England.<\/p>\n

The 2012 Goodwood Trophy race featured GP \u2018titans\u2019 and more nimble voiturette cars based on designs from before the Second World War. These sit-up-and-beg single seaters thundered around the Goodwood Circuit, just as they did in the track\u2019s earliest years. In addition to a series of ERA racers, spectators saw an Alfa Romeo Tipo B and 308C take on Maserati 4CM, 6CM, 8CM and 8CTF, plus Alta, Bugatti Type 54 and 73 and Frazer Nash Monopostos.<\/p>\n

Mark Gillies added a third Goodwood Trophy victory to his tally as Saturday\u2019s programme kicked off with a 25-minute race for Grand Prix and Voiturette cars raced between 1930 and 1950. Pole-sitter Gillies lost out to last year\u2019s winner Mac Hulbert as the Union Jack flag dropped with ERAs blanketing the podium positions.<\/p>\n

However, Hulbert made a mistake at St Mary\u2019s on the second tour, with Gillies sweeping past on the outside at Lavant to take the lead. He was never headed, but the battle for second was far less clear cut. Hulbert dropped out at half-distance, his ERA having refused to run cleanly in practice. It was left to Irishman Paddins Dowling and Duncan Ricketts to keep things interesting, the former\u2019s upright ERA B-type appearing to have the edge over Ricketts\u2019 lowline ERA E-type. However, with just three laps left to run, Dowling pounced as Ricketts was held up by a backmarker.<\/p>\n

After the race, an elated Gillies said, \u201cThe car\u2019s magic and the track is fantastic. I\u2019d like to thank Mary Smith who owns the car for letting me race it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Second-place man Dowling added, \u201cIt\u2019s like racing in paradise. It\u2019s a privilege to race here.\u201d<\/p>\n
