These victories were the first two to be achieved in succession by the Mercedes-Benz factory Formula 1 team in its postwar racing comeback. Chassis 00006 also has special significance as the first open-wheeled slipper-bodied postwar Mercedes-Benz ever to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix race \u2013 having made its debut in that German Grand Prix.<br \/>\nThe car\u2019s innovative W196 design also marked the successful introduction to Formula 1 of the following technologies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fuel-injected engine<\/li>\n<li>All-independent suspension<\/li>\n<li>Multi-tubular \u2018spaceframe\u2019 lightweight chassis design<\/li>\n<li>All-round inboard-mounted brakes<\/li>\n<li>The in-line or \u2018straight-8\u2019 engine \u2018lay-down\u2019 configuration to minimize the car\u2019s overall height<\/li>\n<li>Power take-off from the centre of the engine\u2019s long 8-cylinder crankshaft to minimize vibration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The FIA governing body of International motor sport launched its first postwar set of Grand Prix regulations in 1954, demanding unsupercharged engines of no more than 2 1\/2-litres engine capacity. Mercedes-Benz \u2013 who had previously dominated Grand Prix racing in 1908, 1914 and 1934-39 \u2013 missed the first two 1954 World Championship rounds in Argentina and Belgium. But they then made their debut in the 1954 French Grand Prix at Reims-Gueux. Their all-new W196 cars ran there in enveloping-bodied \u2018Stromlinienwagen\u2019 form, instantly setting totally new performance standards as Juan Manuel Fangio and team-mate Karl Kling finished first and second in both qualifying and the race.<br \/>\nNational media and the specialist sporting press trumpeted the same simple message: \u201cMercedes are Back\u201d!<br \/>\nHowever, the W196 Stromlinienwagen cars with their enclosed wheels proved difficult to place upon the more twisty venue of the following British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Fangio requested an open-wheeled, W196 variant for the following German Grand Prix on the twisty 14.2-mile Nurburging road circuit. Mercedes-Benz tailored new cars \u201800005\u2019 and \u201800006\u2019 to Fangio\u2019s recommendation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_792204\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-792204\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Mercedes-Benz-W196-Race.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-792204\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Mercedes-Benz-W196-Race.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Mercedes-Benz-W196-Race.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Mercedes-Benz-W196-Race-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Mercedes-Benz-W196-Race-100x72.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Mercedes-Benz-W196-Race-770x556.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Mercedes-Benz-W196-Race-293x212.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-792204\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chassis 00006 Mercedes-Benz W196 driven by Juan Manuel Fangio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And it was in this actual car \u2013 chassis \u201800006\u2019 to be offered by Bonhams at Goodwood in 2013 &#8211; that Fangio immediately won the German Grand Prix. He then repeated the feat in the following Swiss Grand Prix on the Bremgarten forest circuit at Berne \u2013 storming round at uncatchable pace in \u201800006\u2019 to win by 58.7 seconds from Argentine compatriot Jose Froilan Gonzalez\u2019s Ferrari. This Swiss victory was Fangio\u2019s third in four Grand Prix races, and assured him of his second Drivers\u2019 World Championship title.<br \/>\nRobert Brooks, Chairman of Bonhams and handling the sale of the Mercedes-Benz, commented, \u201cMy motoring auction career spans five decades and I have been privileged to have handled some of the world\u2019s most desirable and important motor cars.
