The Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2013 auction will be held 12 July on the Tapestry Lawn at Goodwood House in Chichester, UK.
\nBonhams has gathered more than 60 sports, touring and competition cars for the 21st annual Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale, headlined by the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 Juan Manuel Fangio drove to victory at two Grands Prix on his way to his second World Drivers\u2019 Championship. While a pre-sale estimate has not been released, the general consensus is that, if sold, the illustrious W196 will easily<\/em> surpass the all-time auction record ($16,390,000 USD) for automobiles.
\nOther headline cars include the 1955 Maserati 300S Sports Racing Spider that finished third in the 1955 Sebring 12-Hours (estimate \u00a33.5m – \u00a34.5m) and a 1934 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Le Mans Tourer that was originally owned by the 3rd Viscount Ridley (\u00a31.4m – \u00a31.8m).
\nTwo Ferraris will also share the limelight. A 1966 Ferrari 500 Superfast that is one of only six right-hand drive models made is estimated at \u00a3800,000 to \u00a31 million, while the 1965 Ferrari 330GT 2+2 Coup\u00e9 bought by John Lennon the day he passed his driving test is estimated to realise between \u00a3180,000 and \u00a3220,000.
\nAnother important motor car, ‘NOJ 392’, the Austin-Healey 100 Special Test Car that was the Works team entry in the 1953 Mille Miglia and Le Mans 24 Hours, is estimated at \u00a3500,000 to \u00a3600,000, and the Lotus Cortina Competition Saloon in which Sir John Whitmore won the 1965 European Touring Car Championship is estimated at \u00a390,000 to \u00a3120,000.
\nAmong other lots of interest is the earliest right-hand-drive Porsche 911S imported into the UK (estimate \u00a315,000 – \u00a320,000). The 1966 short-wheelbase coupe was once part of Porsche Cars\u2019 press fleet, and is offered for sale in need of comprehensive restoration, in the model\u2019s 50th anniversary year.
\nThe automobilia section will feature some 250 lots, including literature, artwork, glass and metal mascots, picnic sets, luggage, watches and models. The sale will feature three items of memorabilia relating to Hollywood legend Steve McQueen, including a signed Porsche 917 steering wheel from the film \u2019Le Mans\u2019 and the actor\u2019s leather aviator jacket. Both are estimated to realise between \u00a310,000 and \u00a312,000. The jacket, in dark brown leather with fur-lined collar, features in numerous photographs of the star.
\nOther automobilia lots of interest include the registration number \u2018NO 1\u2019, which is estimated to realise between \u00a380,000 and \u00a3100,000; a 1930s \u2018Vitesse\u2019 glass mascot by Rene Lalique (\u00a34,000 – \u00a35,000), and a 1938 Land Speed Record-breaking \u2018MG Magnette\u2019 sterling silver trophy presented to Major A T \u2018Goldie\u2019 Gardiner for a speed of 186.6mph and modelled in the form of his record-breaking car (\u00a310,000 – \u00a312,000).
\nAdmission to the 2013 Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed Auction is by catalogue only. A catalogue admits two people to the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Thursday and Friday only. Items in the auction will be available to preview at Goodwood from 10am until 6pm on Thursday 11th July, and from 9am on Friday 12th July. The sale will begin at 11am on Friday 12th July with automobilia, and continue at 2.15pm with Motor Cars.
