Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari, the Modena, Italy-based museum that opened in 2012 on the site of the house in which Enzo Ferrari himself was born in 1898, is now focusing on the pinnacle of open wheel racing with its current exhibit, entitled “Grand Prix: the Formula 1 Championship Single-Seaters”. The exhibition centers on twenty Formula One cars that helped revolutionize the sport during the years 1950 to 1994, in addition to serving as the rides of many of our heroes from Juan Manuel Fangio to Ayrton Senna.<\/p>\n

The twenty cars, which have come from some of the most important museums and collectors in the world, are arranged in what Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari calls an \u201cexhibition path\u201d, intended to highlight the evolution of the cars in terms of aesthetics, performance, and safety. The arrangement is simple but cleanly elegant, and the machines are complemented by accessories such as period racing suits, steering wheels, engines, trophies, watches and, finally, a display of several dozen crash helmets. This \u201cWorld Champion Line\u201d, as the museum calls it, presents more than fifty helmets used by Formula One World Driving Champions.<\/p>\n

And although this is a museum dedicated to Ferrari, the cars themselves in the exhibit represent an impressive range of Grand Prix machines. Starting right at the beginning is Fangio\u2019s Alfa Romeo 159 Alfetta, the car in which he won his first World Championship. Also from those glorious years of the 1950s are Fangio\u2019s streamlined Mercedes-Benz W 196 and his Lancia-Ferrari D50, along with a Maserati 250F. On loan from the Porsche Museum is an example of their short-lived 804 Grand Prix car, driven by Dan Gurney in 1962, while a Ferrari 312 B2 and Niki Lauda\u2019s World Championship-winning 312 T represent some of Ferrari\u2019s incredible Formula One successes in the 1970s. Other \u201870s machines include a Brabham BT 45B and a Ligier JS 11, but two of the most memorable items in the whole exhibit have to be the Ferrari 312 T4 and the Renault RS 14, the very cars in which Gilles Villeneuve and Ren\u00e9 Arnoux had their epic wheel-bashing duel at Dijon in 1979. Finally, towards the end of the exhibit and bringing visitors into the modern era is one of the all-conquering McLaren-Honda MP 4\/4\u2019s of 1988 and the ex-Ayrton Senna Williams FW15D of 1994.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrand Prix: the Formula 1 Championship Single-Seaters\u201d, is found in the heart of the museum\u2019s thoroughly modern 6,000 square kilometer complex. Also featured in the museum are many pictures, unpublished films and personal items from throughout Ferrari\u2019s life. The exhibit runs until January 28, 2014.<\/p>\n
