1948 Chrysler Town and Country Steer Car<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance 2015 will be staged March 12-15 at the Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach in Amelia Island, Florida. The 20th annual Amelia Island Concours will display the eclectic and eccentric cars customized and modified to promote America\u2019s movie and TV cowboys with the \u201cCars of the Cowboys\u201d class.<\/p>\n

The first gathering of cowboy vehicles at a major international Concours will feature vehicles like Leo Carillo\u2019s (Pancho, from The Cisco Kid<\/em> TV series) 1948 Chrysler Town and Country \u201cSteer Car,\u201d and cowboy movie star Tom Mix\u2019s death car, a 1938 Supercharged Cord convertible. Roy Rogers\u2019 Pontiac by Nudie Cohn will also be in attendance and will take center stage alongside Dale Robertson\u2019s 1958 “Tales of Wells Fargo” Buick Limited convertible built by Buick.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the first gathering of Cowboy Cars at a major international Concours,\u201d said Bill Warner, Founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d\u2019Elegance. \u201cWe hope to retrieve a few happy memories for the grown up kids of the 1950s who can bring their children and grandchildren to Amelia to see something that was such a fun part of our lives. Besides, without classes like \u2018Cars of the Cowboys,\u2019 it just wouldn\u2019t be Amelia.\u201d<\/p>\n

The American western movie served as the financial backbone of the American Depression-era film industry. After World War II, the 1950s saw the rise of television and the western, which became a cultural phenomenon and a staple of all three American television networks. The car business, especially its aftermarket, was quick to exploit the social parallels of the cowboy\u2019s quarter horse and the automobile.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis new car class is entirely my fault,\u201d said Warner. \u201cWhen I was a kid I met Lash LaRue. He was driving his Muntz Jet, which was a very rare car. While all the other kids who had seen his cowboy movies were getting his autograph, I was ogling his car. He asked me if I knew what kind of car it was, and when I told him \u2018Muntz Jet,\u2019 he rewarded me with a ride! That\u2019s something you never forget.\u201d LaRue\u2019s Muntz Jet now sits in pieces in the basement of the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

In addition to a unique class of vehicles that will bring out the kid in many, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation will be donating to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Inc. and other charities on Florida\u2019s First Coast; a feat that has already raised $2.5 million for charity since The Amelia\u2019s inception in 1996.<\/p>\n
