He also won the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix a year after one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UDa9gkW-FOg\">the largest crashes in Formula 1<\/a> since the turn of the century.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_368818\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-368818\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-368818\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Capture1-8.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Kubica driving an M4\" width=\"1919\" height=\"960\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-368818\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lovely weather for a spirited drive&#8230; air is 21 to 24 C, and the track is 28 to 31 C (70 to 75 F air, 85 to 88 F track)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He was seriously injured in 2011 while taking part in the Ronde di Adora Rally that year as a privateer, where his right forearm partially severed. After a heroic amount of effort, he returned to racing, first by winning the inaugural WRC-2 championship, then taking part in the WRC main championship in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/2011-ford-fiesta-rs-wrc\/\">Ford Fiesta RS WRC<\/a> prepped by M-Sport.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_368819\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-368819\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-368819\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Capture2-8.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Kubica driving an M4\" width=\"1919\" height=\"963\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-368819\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Letting the car drift out slightly in Hatzenbach, like you should!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He also, after thorough testing and proof via trials, returned to Formula 1 in 2019 with Williams Racing so that he could &#8220;end it properly,&#8221; partially retiring after the season. He is now a reserve and test driver for the Alfa Romeo F1 team, and races full-time in Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters for BMW.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_368820\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-368820\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-368820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Capture3-7.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Kubica driving an M4\" width=\"1920\" height=\"962\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-368820\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Absolutely flat out down Flugplatz!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Which leads into why he is lapping the Nordschleife in a BMW M4. As he was in Germany at the time for the back to back Nurburgring GP and Nurburgring Sprint leg of the 2020 DTM Championship, he took the opportunity to better his skills as well as learn the Nordschleife in an actual car instead of on a simulator.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_368821\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-368821\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-368821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Capture4-4.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Kubica driving an M4\" width=\"1919\" height=\"958\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-368821\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An M2, a Porsche GT3 RS, and a bike&#8230; easy prey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To do so, he visited the rental companies dotted around the entrance to the Nurburgring where you can quite literally rent a proper, powerful car, prepped for the track. In a bit of a weird twist, the first rental company he visited, as explained in the video, they wouldn&#8217;t let him rent a car without having an instructor in the car, teaching him how to drive on a track.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_368822\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-368822\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-368822\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Capture5-2.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Kubica driving an M4\" width=\"1919\" height=\"961\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-368822\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coming up Kesselchen, approaching Mutkurve, foot to the floor. The speedometer is reading 250 KPH (155 MPH) <em>uphill<\/em>!!!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So he went to Apex Nurburg, which has some small fame for being the place where YouTuber, Nordschleife driving instructor, and &#8216;Ring Taxi driver Mischa Charoudin works. They gave him a 2019 BMW M4 GTS Coupe, modified to have carbon racing seats, a roll cage, and removing the rear seats, and Mischa &#8220;insisted&#8221; he go along as the &#8220;driving instructor&#8230;&#8221; mostly so he could film the lap!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_368823\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-368823\" style=\"width: 1080px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-368823\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Capture6-2.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Kubica driving an M4\" width=\"1920\" height=\"963\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-368823\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Entering the world-famous Karussell behind another M car<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And when Robert hits the track proper, there is no hesitation, no testing of the car, no gentle warm-up. He&#8217;s foot to the floor right out of the gate and puts on an absolute <em>master class <\/em>on how to drive on a track.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_368824\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-368824\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-368824\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Capture7-2.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Kubica driving an M4\" width=\"1919\" height=\"962\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-368824\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Running as straight a line through the Stefan Bellof S as possible<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Listening to how early, and how gradually, he adds throttle out of turns, watching how his braking is inch-perfect, and how the tail of the car rarely, if ever, wags about&#8230; it&#8217;s just sublime how in touch with the car he is. Or, in racing parlance, he just &#8220;Sends it&#8221; corner after corner, straight after straight.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_368825\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-368825\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-368825\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Capture8-2.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Kubica driving an M4\" width=\"1919\" height=\"961\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-368825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A happy Polish driver and a giggling Russian co-driver&#8230; and one lap of the Nordschleife down!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then again, he has driven in the Formula 1 Championship, so this is most likely a leisurely Sunday cruise to him in terms of the amount of concentration and effort required!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, the title is in a large amount of fun.
