He funded (or under-funded) his own entries in the early \u201950s, drove at Indianapolis, later drove for Ferrari, Vanwall and BRM \u2013 running near, but rarely at, the front. A cautious man, he was a known practical joker and startled the field at the \u201959 USGP at Sebring by putting his Cooper on the pole \u2013 he\u2019d allegedly found a short cut where no one was watching.
