The final round of the seven race FIA Thoroughbred Grand Prix (TGP) season was run at Estoril, Portugal, on October 27 and with it new champions were crowned for 2002. The Class A Champion, for Grand Prix cars built before 1972, was American John Delane, in his ex-Cevert Tyrrell 002, who edged out Briton John Bladon, in a Surtees TS009, and the Brabham BT33 of fellow American Duncan Dayton for the title.<\/p>\n
In Class B, for post-1971 non-ground effect cars, Briton Mike Whatley took the honors driving an Ensign N175, while fellow countryman Steve Hartley, in an Arrows A6, took the title for later model flat bottom cars.<\/p>\n
However, TGP overall victories tend to be won by the stunningly quick Class C cars, which comprise all ground-effect Grand Prix cars. In this prestigious class, the overall TGP title went to Swiss driver Fredy Kumschick in his Williams FW07C-14, beating out fellow countryman Hubertus Bahlsen, in his Lotus 91, and Briton Dave Karaskas in an Arrows A4.
