The start of a dramatic race. Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss in the Mercedes W196 bracket Alberto Ascari\u2019s Lancia D50 as Eugenio Castellotti\u2019s Lancia follows closely. Both Mercedes retired, as did Castellotti\u2019s Lancia, while Ascari dramatically crashed at the Chicane and went into the harbor while in the lead, leaving the victory to Maurice Trintignant\u2019s Ferrari 625\/F1. Although only shaken by his watery ordeal, Ascari was killed testing Castellotti\u2019s Ferrari sports car at Monza a few days later.
