The MG Vintage Racers (MGVR) celebrated their 25th anniversary this past June, with three full days of \u201cMG-only racing\u201d at Oklahoma\u2019s Hallett Raceway\u2014the first all-MG race weekend held in North America.<\/p>\n
Founded with 38 MG vintage racers\u2002in 1981, as a newsletter, MGVR now\u2002has 250 members. Although not a race-sanctioning\u2002organization, it encourages MG vintage racing, and has worked closely with race-sanctioning bodies over the years to facilitate MG races at a variety of\u2002North American events.<\/p>\n
The three-day anniversary race event at Hallett provided\u2002racers with lots of\u2002track time and classes for all models of\u2002MGs. In addition to practice, there were scratch races, handicap races, tag team races, and an enduro.<\/p>\n
Another part of the weekend\u2019s festivities included the bestowment of three special recognition awards. As\u2002voted by his fellow racers, Reed Yates was\u2002selected for\u2002MGVR\u2019s \u201cSpirit Award\u201d\u2002based on\u2002his outstanding\u2002\u201cvintage spirit.\u201d Yates served as the anniversary event\u2019s chairman, while also racing his MGTF and \u201934 MG N-type. MG Midget racer Grover Maurer\u2002was presented the \u201cBill Parish Award,\u201d in recognition of a racer focused on\u2002having lots of fun, while not concerned about winning. At 75-years-young, Maurer runs mid-pack and\u2002often\u2002helps\u2002his fellow racers with their cars. Finally, a special plaque was\u2002presented to Greg Prehodka, as the founder of MGVR, who has been racing the same MGTD since 1977.<\/p>\n
