The Porsche 918 Spyder<\/a> is one of the hypercar legends of the modern era. Together with the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1, it stretched the boundaries of performance and innovative automotive technology to new limits. Now, RM Sotheby’s is offering a chance to acquire one of the most unique examples of the\u00a0<\/span>limited series Porsche<\/span><\/a>. You’ll need deep pockets, though\u2014estimates for this gem range from $2.5 – to $3 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

The elegant 918 Spyder was first shown as a concept at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010. It subsequently entered production in September 2013.\u00a0<\/span>Top Gear<\/span><\/a>\u00a0once described the car as Porsche’s hybrid masterpiece and the most complete member of the infamous\u00a0<\/span>hypercar Holy Trinity<\/span><\/a>. There are certainly strong points in favour of that positioning.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"side<\/a><\/p>\n

The mostly carbon-fibre chassis is wrapped around a hybrid powertrain that consists of a naturally aspirated engine paired with twin electric motors. The 4.6-litre V8 is derived from the RS Spyder Le Mans car and cranks out 608 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque on its own. The electric motors add another 279 hp. Altogether, the 918 Spyder puts out 887 hp and 944 lb-ft of torque, making it one of the most powerful cars on the market back then.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Image<\/a><\/p>\n

In skilled hands, the 918 Spyder is a road rocket, even by today’s standards. The 0 to 60 mph sprint is over in 2.3 seconds. It will complete the quarter-mile run in 10.2 seconds at 147 mph before topping out at a maximum speed of 214 mph.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the name implies, Porsche only made 918 units of the hybrid hypercar. The one on sale here is equipped with the Weissach trim, an optional lightweight performance package. It includes visible carbon fibre for parts like the roof, rear wing, mirrors, and window frame. There’s also a redesigned diffuser and lightweight magnesium wheels. The Weissach package shaves about 90 lbs (41 Kg) off the 918 Spyder’s weight.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 918 Spyder is finished in distinctive paint-to-sample Grand Prix White with color-matched magnesium wheels. The white exterior is contrasted by a full leather-to-sample Yachting Blue upholstery with Bianco Leda piping. The steering wheel is covered in the same blue leather, just like the A-pillars, headliner, dashboard and door panels. The consignor took full advantage of Porsche’s Exclusive Manufaktur program, with the car boasting over $96,000 worth of bespoke touches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to reports, Porsche instructed the vehicle owner to keep the option contents confidential as they lacked the capacity to repeat the options package for multiple clients.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other add-ons include a useful front-axle system, struts for the hood, 25-foot charging cable and a HomeLink system. The Porsche 918 Spyder, serial number 656, was delivered brand new by Porsche of North Houston in 2015 and has only covered 12 miles since then.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Porsche 918 Spyder is the headliner of a private garage dubbed the White Collection. The collection includes as many as 56 white-painted Porsches, all headed to auction. Highlights include a pair of 911 Carrera RS 2.7 sports cars, Porsche 911 GT2 RS, 2016 Porsche 911 R, and a 2021 Porsche 911 Targa 4S Heritage model.<\/span><\/p>\n
