{"id":464362,"date":"2023-12-01T06:23:21","date_gmt":"2023-12-01T06:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/?p=464362"},"modified":"2024-12-16T16:47:01","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T16:47:01","slug":"car-of-the-day-1985-porsche-959-paris-dakar-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/car-of-the-day-1985-porsche-959-paris-dakar-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Car Of The Day: 1985 Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1981, the idea of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/the-ultimate-guide-to-the-porsche-959-review-price-specs-videos-images-performance-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche 959<\/a> was conceived with a concerted intention to race in Group B rally racing, and Porsche set to work on its quest to satisfy homologation requirements by developing and producing at least 200 road-going examples.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/1985-Porsche-959-Paris-Dakar697407_-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-464372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/1985-Porsche-959-Paris-Dakar697407_-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"1985 Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar Robin Adams \u00a92018 Courtesy of RM Sotheby's\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1709\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first concept car \u2013 originally dubbed the Gruppe B \u2013\u00a0 was unveiled at the 1983 Frankfurt Auto Show and showcased the very highest echelon of automotive technologies at the time. Features such as a driver-adjustable suspension and its state of the art Porsche-Steuer Kupplung (PSK) all-wheel-drive system, gave the car more than ample arsenal to feel right at home in the rally championship.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/1985-Porsche-959-Paris-Dakar697411_-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-464365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/1985-Porsche-959-Paris-Dakar697411_-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2048\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Porsche 959 prototype road car debuted 2 years later at the same auto show, displayed in both a \u201cKomfort\u201d and more track-oriented \u201cSport\u201d trim. However, a number of production delays meant that Porsche would miss the cut off date for homologation and would end up missing the 1986 Group B season. Then, Group B was cancelled altogether later that year and Porsche\u2019s first customer cars wouldn\u2019t roll off the line until 1987.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/1985-Porsche-959-Paris-Dakar697435_-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-464370\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/1985-Porsche-959-Paris-Dakar697435_-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"1985 Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar Robin Adams \u00a92018 Courtesy of RM Sotheby's\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1709\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite the obvious set back, Porsche still managed to compete with the 959 and have a brief but meaningful run in motorsport. The prototype race cars entered the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally and managed first, second and fifth place finishes.
