A 30-year reunion of the participants and fans of what is believed to be the only \u201cDead Heat\u201d in Road America history is planned for the 2009 June Sprints weekend at the historic Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, track.<\/p>\n
In 1979, at the end of what could be called a decade of Formula Vee \u201cWars,\u201d 57 FVs gathered at the annual June Sprints for what was expected to be a typical slugfest featuring large packs of draft-happy FVs battling for every position. During the race, the lead pack consisted of anywhere between 10 to 12 cars and by the end of 48 miles of racing, 5 cars streaked under the checkered flag within 8\/10 of a second of each other!<\/p>\n
In an era before transponders, the winner was determined by the eyes of the officials, and it was decided that Dave Smith and John Hogdal crossed the line at the exact same time. A \u201cDead Heat\u201d was declared and confusion and controversy ensued. Officially, Tom Stephani was declared the 3rd-place finisher, Scott Rubenzer was 4th, and David Harris was 5th. Close behind were Marty Potashnik, Stan Townes, Denny Ura, and Jerry Knapp. Some weeks later, a photo of the finish was produced which only served to stoke the finish controversy further.<\/p>\n
In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the historic \u201cDead Heat,\u201d an informal get together is planned for Saturday, June 20, 2009. Details will be forthcoming, but anyone interested in participating will be welcome. Photos, videos, recollections, lies, and tall tales will be shared among the attendees, along with adult beverages and food.
