The helmet and goggles worn by Sir Stirling Moss when he won the 1957 British Grand Prix, Aintree, assisted by Tony Brooks, are to be the centerpiece of the memorabilia section of the Bonhams Auction at the Goodwood Revival, in September.<\/p>\n
Since that historic day, when Moss took the checkered flag in a Vanwall becoming the first British driver to win the British Grand Prix in a British car, the helmet and goggles have undergone a transformation creating their own piece of motor racing history.<\/p>\n
Sir Stirling sold the items in an auction in the late 1960s and they were purchased by the British Oxygen Company (BOC) with the sole purpose of making them into a trophy. The helmet was painted gold, housed in a perspex display case, and formed the BOC Golden Helmet Trophy which was challenged for in Formula Ford events from 1971 to 1974. The first recipient was Bernard Vermillio, and the last Syd Fox.<\/p>\n
Following the withdrawal of BOC as sponsors, the trophy went into storage and later sold to present owner, David McLaughlin. \u201cEighteen months ago I thought the time was right to consider parting with the trophy. After consultation with Sir Stirling and Lady Moss, it was felt that Sir Stirling\u2019s 80th birthday celebration was appropriate to offer the piece for auction,\u201d said McLaughlin.<\/p>\n
