The Celebration of Automobiles that proved so popular with fans and participants in 2011 will return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway next May, as part of the festivities leading up to the 96th running of the Indianapolis 500. The event, scheduled for May 10\u00ad\u201313, 2012, will honor \u201cThe Manufacturers of the Indianapolis 500\u201d as well as the rich history of the race.<\/p>\n
The inaugural Celebration of Automobiles this past May featured more than 200 classic cars from 1911-1961, and was one of many memorable highlights of the month-long centennial celebration of the Indianapolis 500. Vintage-classic cars from 1920-1970 that were produced by manufacturers participating in the 500 during that era will be the featured vehicles in 2012. This group includes Alfa-Romeo, Auburn, Bentley, Bugatti, Buick, Chrysler, Dodge, Duesenberg, Ferrari, Fiat, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz and Stutz, among others.<\/p>\n
An expanded event schedule kicks off on Thursday, May 10 with a round of golf for entrants on the Speedway\u2019s Brickyard Crossing course, while Friday will feature Registration, a track lap and a welcoming reception at the Hall of Fame museum. Judging in a variety of classes will dominate Saturday\u2019s proceedings, with winners announced at that evening\u2019s Awards Dinner, where question and answer sessions with Indy 500 drivers and IMS historian Donald Davidson will be highlighted. On Sunday morning, prior to the track opening for Indycar practice, concours winners and other select cars will take a lap of the big 2.5-mile oval.<\/p>\n
