The Coronado Speed Festival 2012 was held September 21-23 at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, California, nearby the city of San Diego.<\/p>\n

Sanctioned and organized by HMSA, the 15th annual Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival saw a field of more than 200 historic racing cars take to the 1.7-mile course constructed in mere days on the runways and taxiways of the military base.The track is laid out with orange cones and water barrels, with a number of asphalt to cement transitions that made traction an issue for several drivers. Check out the backgrounds of many of the images and you will see Navy aircraft, sailboats on the bay, San Diego across the channel and other sights not normally associated with race tracks.<\/p>\n

Participants in the 2012 edition of the “Race at the Base” were grouped into nine different race classes, each divided according to make, age and horsepower. The following race groups were seen on the track: 1952 \u2013 1959 Sports Racing and Production cars; 1962 \u2013 1972 Sports Racing and Formula Cars under 2000cc; 1969 \u2013 1980 Sports Racing and Formula Cars; 1953 \u2013 1966 Production cars under 2000cc; 1959 \u2013 1966 Production cars \u2013 Disc Brake; 1962 \u2013 1966 Productions cars over 2500cc; 1965 \u2013 1988 FIA Manufacturer Championship Cars; Historic NASCAR; and 1966 \u2013 1972 Historic Trans-Am. While the practice laps had the cars spread out and not maintaining contact, once the green flag dropped, the races were close with lots of passing.<\/p>\n

Notable entries at the 2012 Fleet Week historic races included 1966 McLaren M1B of Jerry Entin; 1953 Kurtis 500S of Tom Claridge; Steve Schmidt’s 1965 Mini Marcos; Ranson Webster’s 1973 Porsche 911 RSR 2.8 and Abarth Porsche; 1968 Lola T70 Mk IIIB of Steve Hilton; Lorne Leibel’s 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB\/4 Daytona; Pete Whitehead’s 1964 Iso Rivolta; Fiat Abarth 210 Berlino Corso of Ed Roll; Bob Engberg’s 1957 Elva Mk. IIB; John Goodman’s 1964 Shelby Cobra 289 and 1972 Sparling Ferrari 312 Special; Alan Frick in Alfa Romeo TZ; and the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwings of Steve Marx and Alex Curtis.<\/p>\n

The 2012 Coronado Speed Festival also featured the Military Pit Crew Challenge, which saw 13 teams comprised of Navy and Marine personnel face off in a timed race to enact a simulated NASCAR pit stop.<\/p>\n

“This competition embodies the spirit and skills that characterizes these U.S. Navy personnel \u2013 hard work, skill, speed, and teamwork,” said Captain Chris Sund, Executive Officer of Naval Air Station North Island. “They practiced for only a short time and were able to accomplish their mission in about 35 seconds.”<\/p>\n

The Pit Crew Challenge featured a customized NASCAR on display commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Navy SEALs, first commissioned in San Diego in 1962. Other events celebrating this milestone at Speed Festival were the spectacular flyovers and a jump by the U.S. Navy Parachute Team, the Leap Frogs, during the lunchtime activities, and the event’s Co-Grand Marshal, Rear Admiral Cathal “Irish” Flynn, one of the most honored SEALs in history and a member of the original SEAL Team One.<\/p>\n
