Fifty years ago, three young men with a common dream banded together to create the Apollo GT.\u00a0 Milt Brown and Ron Plescia envisioned an American answer to the great European GTs of the early 1960s. Together with Frank Reisner\u2019s Intermeccanica, they launched Apollo in the United States.<\/p>\n
Bodies were hand-crafted by Intermeccanica in Italy then shipped to Oakland, California, for assembly by Brown and company.\u00a0 Apollos were sold in Hollywood and elsewhere to celebrities and entertainers, business leaders and professionals. Although the cars were highly praised in contemporary road tests\u2014Road & Track and Car and Driver applauding the car\u2019s mechanical excellence and its reliability as a daily driver\u2014the Apollo project was short-lived with only 88 of these high-performance exotics ever being made.<\/p>\n
Now, 50 years after its launch, Monterey\u2019s Concorso Italiano has announced that the Apollo Owners Registry has chosen the annual Italian-themed concours to commemorate this anniversary. In addition to an excellent display of Apollos for enthusiasts to enjoy, most of the principles involved with the Apollo will be on-site and available for questions and discussions.<\/p>\n
