C.L. \u201cCharlie\u201d Earwood who rose to prominence as a driver, promoter and official in the top levels of American sports car racing, has passed away at his home in Punta Gorda, Florida, at the age of 89.<\/p>\n
Following a successful career in the insurance industry, Earwood retired to pursue the passion he had for his family, fishing and sports car racing. He joined the SCCA in 1960, racing E and F Production Porsches, and soon introduced his sons, Terry and Stephen, to the sport as well. Eventually, Earwood stopped driving and moved into organization, serving as Chief Steward with both the SCCA and IMSA, where he oversaw multiple series and major events.<\/p>\n
In 1981 he was honored by the SCCA with its Woolf Barnato Trophy for his outstanding contributions to the club, and induction into the SCCA Hall of Fame followed in 2012. He also served as General Manager of Sebring International Raceway, where he designed the current circuit layout, and was inducted into its Hall of Fame on 2006.<\/p>\n
Earwood is survived by his wife of 72 years, Ann, his two sons, two granddaughters, a grandson and four great-grandchildren. To them and all his many friends in the sport, Vintage Racecar<\/i> offers its sincere condolences.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
