Crossl\u00e9 was inspired to open his own shop, Crossl\u00e9 Cars, after finding he couldn\u2019t afford to go racing with one of Colin Chapman\u2019s popular Lotus VI machines, and so decided to build his own Ford-powered special, the Crossl\u00e9 Mk I (pictured, right). His subsequent Mk II and Mk III designs proved sufficiently successful that he became a constructor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His cars featured innovation, high-quality construction and attention to detail, while offering good value for their cost, which earned them immense popularity. Crossl\u00e9 Cars initially produced chassis for the Formula 1172, Junior, Formula A, Formula B, Formula C, and Sports Racing classes, and in 1968 Crossl\u00e9 driver Roger Barr won the Formula B National Championship at the SCCA\u2019s annual Runoffs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8705\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8705\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/n3-201411-p3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8705\" src=\"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/n3-201411-p3.jpg\" alt=\"John Crossle with neighbour Samuel James Gibson in the Mk.I at Drumreagh in 1957. \" width=\"900\" height=\"584\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8705\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Crossle with neighbour Samuel James Gibson in the Mk.I at Drumreagh in 1957.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the birth of Formula Ford in 1969, Crossl\u00e9 found a natural home and his FFs achieved exceptional results worldwide, although Dennis Firestone\u2019s 1976 SCCA Runoffs victory with a Crossl\u00e9 30F produced the firm\u2019s only U.S. National Championship. Crossl\u00e9 FFs were, however, a staple of racing driver schools worldwide due to their simplicity and durability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Upon Crossl\u00e9\u2019s retirement in 1997, the company, headquartered in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland, was taken over by Arne Black, who subsequently sold it to Paul McMorran in 2012, and it continues today as the oldest customer racing car constructor in the UK.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Crossl\u00e9 is survived by his wife Rosemary, sons Henry, daughter Caroline and grandson Sam, to whom Vintage Racecar extends its sincerest sympathies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Racing car designer and manufacturer John Crossl\u00e9 has died at the age of 83 following a brief illness.
