For the very first time, visitors to the recent Hampton Court Concours of Elegance, September 5-7, were able to vote for their personal favorite of the 60 handpicked concours cars.<\/p>\n
The overall winner of the inaugural Public Choice vote was a rare alloy-bodied 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing Coupe, one of just 29 alloy Gullwings built, from a total of 1,400 300 SLs\u2014the others all being steel-bodied.<\/p>\n
The Public Choice-winning Mercedes-Benz was the 19th alloy 300 SL built, first ordered by Italian gentlemen racer Dottore Alberico Cacciari, who raced it at every opportunity.\u00a0 This car was the only alloy-bodied 300 SL to compete in the 1956 and 1957 Mille Miglias, with Cacciari driving. The car appeared at the Concours of Elegance as it raced in 1956, with its \u201c452\u201d racing numbers, and original tool kit and factory-fitted luggage.<\/p>\n
This Gullwing was also awarded the AIG Private Clients Award for the Most Historically Significant Car at an exclusive dinner for the Concours car owners during the event, held in King Henry VIII\u2019s Great Dining Hall at Hampton Court Palace.\u00a0 Voting for the 2014 Concours of Elegance Public Choice was conducted by simply texting the entry number of the favored concours car from their mobile phone, all helping to raise money for the Concours\u2019 official chosen charities in the process.<\/p>\n
The overall 2014 Concours of Elegance \u201cBest of Show\u201d\u2014as chosen by the 60 concours car entrants, was the stunning Touring-bodied 1931 Alfa Romeo 6c 1750 \u201cFlying Star,\u201d a spectacular show car that made its concours debut in 1931 at the Concorso d\u2019Eleganza Villa d\u2019Este, where, accompanied by the model Josette Pozzo, it won the Coppa d\u2019Oro di Villa d\u2019Este trophy.\u00a0 The Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court was the first time the Alfa Romeo had appeared in the UK. The annual Hampton Court Concours of Elegance differs from a traditional concours, which usually includes a judging panel briefed to scrutinize each entry and select a \u201cwinning\u201d car.
