The Pinehurst Concours d’Elegance 2015 was held Saturday, May 2nd at the Pinehurst Resort and Golf Club in North Carolina. Warm spring weather and Carolina blue skies greeted the field of classic automobiles displayed on the first holes of courses #3 and #5 at the famed golf resort. In addition to the traditional Concours classes, the third annual event featured Ferrari; Mercedes-Benz; Porsche; Corvette; Orphan Cars; Micro Cars and Motorcycles.<\/p>\n

A 1919 Pierce-Arrow Model 66 A-4 Tourer owned by Robert S. “Bob’ Jepson Jr. won Best in Show at the 2015 Pinehurst Concours d’Elegance.The bright purple 1919 Pierce-Arrow, which stands seven feet tall at its highest point and weighs an amazing 7,000 pounds, was bodied by Don Lee Coachworks of Los Angeles for famous silent movie actor Roscoe \u201cFatty\u201d Arbuckle. Its 6-cylinder and 825 cubic inch displacement was the largest made engine for automobiles at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are so thrilled that we came up here; just a beautiful part of the country,\u201d said the 73-year-old Jepson, who is from Savannah, Georgia, and is the current chair of the Georgia Ports Authority. \u201cAnd what a bunch of beautiful cars that were here today. The 13 classes were just chalked full of gorgeous and unusual, and just super Concours quality cars.”<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is the outlandish color that get\u2019s people\u2019s attention \u2013 bright purple with white tires,\u201d added Jepson, himself sporting a purple and white bow tie. \u201cIt\u2019s what we call our \u2018low profile car.\u2019 Fatty just had to have that purple and those white tires. I can just see him strutting around Hollywood in that car. It gives you good exercise because it\u2019s a beast. To turn it in any kind of tight configuration I feel like Popeye with these great big arms. In the short time we\u2019ve owned it it has given us so much joy, and evidently it gave a lot of people here today a lot of joy. The public loves the car because it\u2019s so outlandish.”<\/p>\n

The Pierce-Arrow was featured in the Pre-War American Class and captured Best in Show during Jepson\u2019s first Concours showing as the car\u2019s new owner. After a complete restoration in 2007 by Lon Kruger of Scottsdale, Arizona, the ‘Arbuckle Pierce-Arrow’ won Best in Class at the 2007 Pebble Beach Concours and the 2008 Amelia Island Concours. It was also the star of the California Design Exhibition at the Peterson Automobile Museum in Beverly Hills in 2009.<\/p>\n

The 1919 Pierce-Arrow Model 66 A-4 Tourer joins a growing fraternity of cars which have won Best in Show at the Pinehurst Concours. Previous winners include a 1938 Steyr 220 Glaser Roadster and 1931 Cadillac 452A \u2013 both of which returned to the 2015 event and were displayed prominently side-by-side on the fairways of Pinehurst Resort.<\/p>\n

Other noted entrants at Pinehurst was a Ferrari class that featured a great selection of Modena’s finest, including the Best in Class-winning 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB\/4 NART Spider, a 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB\/4 ‘Daytona’, a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT\/L ‘Lusso’ and a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider, among others.<\/p>\n

The Mercedes-Benz class, judged by Sports Car Digest Publisher Jamie Doyle and automotive journalist extraordinaire Dave Kinney, saw the 1971 Mercedes-Benz 600 SWB of Roberto Quiroz win Best in Class Sedan and the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Roadster of Bruce Adams take home Best in Class Open.<\/p>\n
