Can a wrecked car stay with you forever, without taking up too much space?<\/p>\n<p>On an overcast, late June weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sportscar course, Studio 47\u2014an Ohio-based restoration, repair and race prep shop\u2014 lined up their Ferrari 360 Challenge car with similar GT-type cars for a 10-lap club race.\u00a0 It had rained overnight and the pavement was slightly damp. The group\u2019s ten entrants followed the pace car onto the track and made a warm-up lap of the storied Lexington circuit.\u00a0 As Studio 47 driver Craig Reed approached the final corner of the pace lap, the green flag began to wave.<\/p>\n<p>The pack of snarling Corvettes, Porsches, a GT1 Capri and a GT1 Olds Cutlass roared towards the first corner under the flagger\u2019s stand.\u00a0 Then, without warning, it happened\u2026the Porsche RSR next to Reed got loose as the pack accelerated for the start, and shot across the bow of the Lime Green Ferrari, pushing him into the pit wall\u2026hard.\u00a0 Both drivers were unhurt, but their race was over before it began, and they fortunately walked away.\u00a0 Reed and Studio 47 partner, Trina Allison, surveyed the damage once the flatbed truck returned the car to their paddock\u2014a complete write off\u2014body, suspension, glass\u2014not worth repairing. Painful.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Fender.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-524709 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Fender.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Fender.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Fender-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Fender-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Fender-75x100.jpg 75w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Fender-770x1027.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Fender-293x391.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/a>Just two weeks before, a catastrophic drivetrain failure as Trina Allison raced in an SVRA event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway sidelined another of Studio 47\u2019s competition cars\u2014a race-prepped Porsche 968 in beautiful Martini Livery.\u00a0 This was more than Allison wanted to deal with.\u00a0 She decided to sell the Porsche, as is, and part out the remainder of the Ferrari.<\/p>\n<p>Sad story\u2026 right?\u00a0 Not necessarily, as this tale has a truly &#8220;silver lining.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Enter Christi Schimpke, purveyor of wrecked exotic cars, or rather the discarded sheet metal from exotic cars \u201cup-cycled\u201d into unique, attractive jewelry that has graced celebrities on the red carpet. \u00a0It\u2019s cleverly called\u2026what else? \u201cCRASH&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Schimpke, under the guise of her Mina Bea (named for her grandmother) jewelry company, has been creating pretty and unique bracelets, necklaces, bangles and earrings, generally sold at craft and jewelry shows, as well as online.\u00a0 Her studio is situated within the confines of her husband, Dan\u2019s, Beverly Hills-based body shop, Beverly Coachcraft.\u00a0 Because of the locale and Dan\u2019s skills, the shop does mostly high-end cars including Maserati, Mercedes, Jaguar, Porsche, amongst others.\u00a0 Many are celebrity owned\u2014but for the purpose of anonymity\u2014are never revealed.\u00a0 Like everyone driving in LA traffic, these beautiful cars are not immune to the occasional fender bender.<\/p>\n<p>One day it occurred to Christi, that most of this bent sheet metal was either being discarded or picked up by recyclers at the shop. The light bulb that went off in her head has become a three-year-old \u201cexotic car-to-cool jewelry\u201d brand, CRASH.\u00a0 Only using sheet metal from minor accidents, Schimpke developed a process to cut and bend the metal into unique jewelry, while maintaining the integrity of the paint and clear coats.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s like enamel.\u00a0 It\u2019s beautiful,\u201d said Schimpke of the newfound materials.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-524708\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash2.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash2-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash2-1024x573.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash2-100x56.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash2-770x431.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash2-293x164.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a>CRASH Jewelry quickly became a fan favorite at the select historic racing events, where it was displayed.\u00a0 \u201cWe were so impressed with Christi\u2019s creativity and the uniqueness of her automotive jewelry, that we included it at some of our display booths at the races,\u201d said <em>Vintage Racecar<\/em> Publisher, Casey Annis. \u201cIt proved to be wildly popular both for men and women. The ladies are drawn to it, because it is such elegant and interesting jewelry and the guy\u2019s want to buy it for them because it\u2019s a real piece of a Ferrari or a Porsche! It seems to have appeal to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of Schimpke\u2019s favorite, recent \u201cup-cyclings\u201d was sheet metal from a Lamborghini fender bender. \u201cThe color is called \u2018Arancio Argos,\u2019 which is like a metallic burnt orange. The pieces were stunning\u2014and the paint quality was amazing!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-524707 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash1.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash1-100x56.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash1-770x433.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/crash1-293x165.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a>Quite by chance, Studio 47 sold the Porsche 968 to Tom Stahler, Director of Sales and Marketing at Vintage Racecar. During the negotiations for the car, the topic of the Ferrari Challenge car came up.\u00a0 Stahler, who is also friends with Schimpke, expressed interest in the damaged sheet metal from the racecar as interesting donor material for Schimpke\u2019s jewelry.\u00a0 Trina Allison loved the idea and excitedly sent the entire front fender panel inside the Porsche when shipped.<\/p>\n<p>Like all the exotic body panels she\u2019s used before, parts of the Ferrari Challenge car have become part of Schimpke\u2019s jewelry, in particular as the foundation for her \u201cFerrari Challenge Collection.\u201d\u00a0 Each piece, like all CRASH jewelry, is bespoke and completely unique.\u00a0 As the materials donor, Allison was excited to be the first recipient of a bangle, featuring the Ferrari\u2019s lime green exterior, accentuated by the car\u2019s striping.
